Another issue is a lot of the AT tyres apparently aren't actually rated up to the load of a Transporter at the sizes that'll fit!

Had these recommended to me as an option "WINTER SNOW VAN / KUMHO KC11 - 195R14C" . So these'd be keeping the std wheels and be up to the correct load rating, but might look a bit puny , probably be naff in the mud and might overheat in very hot weather!!!!

Decisions decisions. Not found any bargains yet though!

You wont get great tyre life out of a snow tyre which is what the KUMHO KC11 is

I know, just by virtue of it being a softer compound.

Are there any AT tyres out there that do have the "legal" load rating for a Syncro or is that something that people turn a blind eye to? (though obviously PC Plod and insurance company won't if anything ever goes wrong!!)

Though by my calcs Gross Vehicle Weight of 2390kg/4 = 597.5kg per tyre

597.5 x 25% safety factor = 746.8 ........ so anything with a load rating of 98 upwards should be fine (and a 89 rating upwards would still be legal) Am I missing something or are the tyre sales people feeding me rubbish? Is there different ratings for a commercial vehicle to a "car" ?

My Continental 225/70/15 are above the load rating required

Well, i was meaning for someone who is looking for a set of AT's. As that is what mattk918 is looking for.

If it were me, I would personally buy a set of mud terrains (as you know Clive). AT's just turn into slicks at the first sign of mud.

Contact Cooper Tyres about the difference between the Cooper Discoverer AT and the ATR. Got the following response......

"Dear Mr Taylor.
It is Cooper/Avon tyres policy - where not being an original equipment supplier - only tyres with dimensions equal to or in excess of the original equipment can be recommended.
I am therefore informed by our technical department that we are unable to recommend the fitment of the Cooper ATR to your vehicle due to the original standard fitment being a “C” (commercial) constructed tyre and having the load carrying capacity in excess of the ATR tyre regardless of the purposed service condition to which the vehicle will be used."

.....which obviously doesn't mean you can't fit them, just they won't recommend them!

Its getting the higher load rating in the "smaller" tyre sizes that seems tricky. The Cooper 205/70 are "only " 96 whereas the 215/75's are 100 ! Its a tricky old game (though to be fair I am probably thinking way too hard about all of this, I should just make a decision and buy something!!!)

Gone with the Cooper ATRs 207/70 R15 96T for £69 all in per corner, fitting tomorrow afternoon. Decided that I had researched it to death, and with (hopefully) snow forecast I should get to test them out.....

Will let you know what I think of them!

Well grip in the snow is good!!!! I had to try reasonably hard to break traction.

Lots more sidewall "bulge" than I am used to..... thought they needed more pressure but there is 40psi (which is max) in them at the back. Feel a bit different on tarmac too. The old tyres were rock hard (zero sidewall deflection) and no grip so they just slid if you were too exhuberant. These definitely feel like the tread is gripping and the tyre is then deflecting instead..... Feels a bit squirmy underfoot! (thats a proper tyre testers term, honest!)

Bet the F0rd Mundano that poked his car into a parked one in our village this morning right in front of me wished he had some on though....

I've just ordered some new alloys. It is my Xmas present to myself and from my wife. They are ZCW force shadows. Numbers are all right. Need a spacer for the ET but already have them from the merc wheels currently on them. The load weight is a very generous 1150kg a corner so great for the Syncro.
