The other head offered up some interest too. Both are exhaust valves, again.

I discovered the purpose of the mysterious "half" tapped holes inside the crank pulley, thanks to someone on the wbx6 fb group: the Oettinger dry sump system!

Interesting.
Any ideas yet as to why there are so many issues with the top end, broken spring, collets and valve guide dropping out. Has it overheated in a major way ?
Are all the WBX 6 engines dry sumped or just some of them. I recognise the belt tensioner by the way, straight off a 2 litre 924, though that design with the built in hex adjuster is no longer available if you need to source one.

The dry sump was a later addition, but apparently somewhat under-developed.

I would have thought an under developed dry sump was better than wet sump any day of the week

As for the other problems, I think that its just been over-revved at some time. It had a few coolant weeps, this wont have helped temperatures in the middle of the heads. Nothing looks overheated though, other than the exhaust valve stems looking a little gummed/blackened. A sign of overheated oil?
Some owners have tried fitting smaller waterpump pulleys to increase the flow rate through the waterjacket.
I think that an oil cooler system is essential to take some load off the water cooling side of things.

It's not unusual to have build up on the back of the exhaust valves, probably more likely from heavy breathing / crankcase pressure ?? Exhaust valves get very hot don't they.
I would agree on fitting an oil cooler system, a decent one as well, up front, there was a good discussion on this a few months ago.

Bit of an unexpected result today! Many thanks and a big favour owing to Ray Perry.

You are just engaging in simple gauge envy now.... mines got 3 times as many letters as yours

I know it doesnt matter at all, but these details are very satisfying nonetheless!
I am also a very overdue in saying a very big THANKYOU to Aidan for passing the wbx6 offer my way. Immensely grateful for the opportunity.
I think he'll agree that its probably for the best, given the work required so far

Looks like this engine has early type thick-wall bearings, now up on the stand ready to split the case.
And one rocker box had a Cheerios box gasket...

What, you mean that isn't his front room ?
I also need to know what cereal packet he's going to use for the rocker covers too. He'll probably need two with it being a 6 cylinder.
On a more technical note, the single piece thrust bearing does match the early case web at the flywheel end (not wanting to use words like front or rear of the engine)
