I'm back ! Soz for the delay, I've not been on the forum for a couple of days. I did manage to summon the willpower to tackle the Parts Mountain in the garage. There's a stack of about 8 proper size crates all full of Syncro and engine parts, all far too heavy to move, so I have to unpack each crate in turn.. I got to the bottom layer before remembering the pistons I put in the engine in my van (AHU block) were in fact from that AFN block Alex has. DOH !

(Jez, no, texts should be fine, unless you're thinking of a different Andy ?)

thanks to a timely pic from Simon and confirmation from Alex, the plastic insert does come out of the filter housing! :D Image
managed to empty the sink of the dirty hot water before the wife came downstairs..he he..

Now added to the pile for zinc'ing :D

A question... Can the pulleys for the ps pump and water pump be zinc'd? Thinking of either putting them in the zinc pile or chemically blacking them

Bit different I know but the pulleys off my mk2 escort engine (2.0 pinto) I had blasted and zinc plated, the cast is fairly pourus and the zinc finish went a bit blotchy after a short period of time, almost looked like it had gone mouldy. If they are pressed steel I would say yes if they are cast then I would paint.

Going to be putting my afn back together soon, noticed there is only one dowel in the block for the head and gasket to locate on do you no if that is correct Lloyd?

Cheers for the info, I think mine are steel. As for your block, I don't know, sorry. I'm sure someone else will though...

Looks like you drained your engine oil into the sink!

The block only has one dowel on these engines so its worth making up a couple of fitting studs to prevent any gasket denting dramas...sawn of old head bolts with a slot cut in for a screwdriver about a inch long will do, pull them out with a telescopic magnet.

So avid readers, things are afoot! After spending a week or trying to bend my brain around these pistons and implications of using them, i have bit the bullet and bought new...
Not just standard new..Have gone for 0.5mm oversize and will be getting a rebore, will have to get a 2.0 badge now :D .....

What made you decide on the oversize pistons? I thought the bores were well within spec.

Bores where within spec.. But...pistons were the smallest size (.44) Idealy I wanted the largest standard piston (.48) to tie in better with the .54 bore. With the .44 piston the clearance was 0.1 which is the limit.
After a bit of searching I found that no stockist had the .48 pistons. I'm sure that the engine could have been built and worked, but there was a chance of smoke and noisy pistons. I did not want to have that worry with a new engine.
With new larger pistons it negates those issues and the block can be bored to as new tolerances. It wasn't something chosen lightly.. Me and Alex have looked into it, and it was my call in the end. The added bonus is that my wallet is a lot easier to carry round now..

I would have done the same...all the time money and effort you're putting in, it makes no sense to skimp in this area.
I hope Mrs. Lloydy has given you her approval....new pistons and a re-bore equates to a foreign city-break with two new outfits and shoes and handbags to match.
I hope you haven't been economical with the truth
