the only 2pole, 5 bar, M10x1, VDO pressure sender ive found decent info on so far is: "5 bar gauge with a 1.2 bar switch and m10x1 thread. (360081030018c)"

You can change the switch, surely? Gauge sender sounds fine.. main thing is the space, it's very tight around the filter head's aux port

Can anyone tell me what BAR/PSI the sender in the filter housing switches at?

There must be a VDO pressure sender that has the correct output for the 2nd pole, meaning i can do away with the original sender and not bother with a T piece etc.

I'm going to be putting the oil temp sender in the other fitting in the filter housing by the way...

Vagcat suggests that its a 0.9bar sender? (its the only one listed to go in the filter housing for the 1Z & AAZ - 3 068919081A oil pressure switch 0,9BAR M10X1 1 pin grey / 1Y,AAZ,1Z, AFN,AHU

There is a another one listed as 1.8Bar, but doesnt list it for the 1Z or AAZ. (056919081E oil pressure switch 1,8BAR M10X1 1 pin white / ABF,AEK,AFT )

Am i missing something here? Surely the high pressure sender should be more than 0.9 Bar shouldnt it?

BTW, the vagcat listing for the low pressure sender is what i would expect: (028919081D oil pressure switch 0,25BAR M10X1 1 pin blue )

I must have understood something wrongly as the VDO one Neil is showing that was £40 was as I understood from what I was told took the BOD and the OP reading from the two poles :? otherwise you could just get the same thing for £6 off ebay... Is the one you have Neil actually earthed at one pole and the other sent to the oil pressure sender? I only ask because if the earth one was connected to the BOD the BOD would have been set off if connected to it. Obviously you would have found this out hence the exrta take off point since, could of swore you said the one from VW Heritage for £40 did the both.... Must have miss heard you :cheese

Jed, have you got a part number for the one you bought?

Typically the low/low is set at about 0.25~0.3 bar, depending on vehicle and switch (colour) code.

Typically the high/low is set at about 0.9~1.4 bar, depending on vehicle and switch (colour) code.

ETKA (the VW parts counter software) lists these sensors and their pressures and colour codes for your vehicle:

Low rpm/low pressure sensor - 028 919 081 C (0.3 bar BROWN) - Early original fit?

Low rpm/low pressure sensor - 028 919 081 D (0.25 bar BLUE) - Later replacememt for all .3bar switches

High rpm/low pressure sensor (Petrols) - 068 919 081 A (0.9 bar GREY) - Std. 2.1

High rpm/low pressure sensor (Petrols) - 068 919 081 E (1.8 bar WHITE)

High rpm/low pressure sensor (Diesels) - 068 919 081 A (0.9 bar GREY)- common with petrol sensor

High rpm/low pressure sensor (Diesels) - 068 919 818 (1.4 bar BLACK)

This was the common wisdom at the time it was written for the Wiki.. e.g. 0.9 bar (grey)

At 80C and 2000 rpm it should be a good 2 bar, so think that if it falls to 0.9 then thats a real bad fail (last ditch warning)

Black 1.4 or 1.8 bar white if you can get them are your alternates... so why not start high and drop back if they buzz too often.

Shouldn't have any probs with a Tdi anyway unless the turbo's pissing oil past its seals, or the DOPWS circuit is knackered (mines removed, just us the gauge now, happy with that)

Clive, thats superb!! That's exactly how i needed it explaining. I totally get how that system works now, i'd forgotten about the rev range bit.
I reckon i'll go with the 5bar, 1.2bar warning, VDO sender that ive found then. Seems it should be just about right.

Bugger,

That pressure sender (5bar, 1.2bar warning, VDO sender) is setting off the buzzer above 2k rpm.
Gauge is showing that there's good pressure, DOPS is working ok, has done for ages and behaves if i earth it.
What's going on there then?

I expected the 1.2bar sender less likely to set off the buzzer?
I'm confused....
Ideas?

may be worth swaping the wires around that are surplying the bod system to the opposing sender/swich.

My BOD is very sensitive to the dash pod plug being inserted correctly. Always goes off over 2000 rpm if it has moved a little bit. Simple things first!!

The Vdo one I bought tells you to earth the second terminal and attach the bod wire to that also. I know it sound odd but I am only telling you what it said.

Ah....ok. That's interesting as i didnt get any instructions with mine. Ive actually got it set up at the moment exactly as you suggest Jed. I'll just tidy up my temporary wiring then and leave it as is

Facts and figures so far:
Oil pressure seems to be generally around the 4.5bar mark when above 2.5k rpm, about 1.2bar at idle.
Im getting a nice steady 80ºc from the oil temperature (Mocal thermostatic take off plate, 0.5inch pipes, Vauxhall frontera oil cooler)
Boost says i'm peaking at around 1.5bar, only getting that when i really stamp on it though.

Anyone got any idea why i'm having trouble with my water temp gauge? (not the one on the dash by the way)

- Its a brand new 120ºC VDO sender.
- I've double and triple checked that i've got the wires going to the correct places.
- Just in case... Ive checked the continuity of the cable running from the sender to the gauge and that's fine, there's no break in it.
- To check the gauge, Ive earthed the sender wire and the gauge goes straight to the highest temp reading, all good there.
- With the sender wire still connected, I've tried adding an additional earth from the sender to the engine block, this also sends the gauge to the highest temp reading.

But still no temperature registering on the gauge (yes i have made sure i got the engine warm  )

I'm stumped,.....Ideas?

Put a wire to the oil temperature sender just to see if you get some sort of reading from that to check if your water temperature sender is faulty.
