no they were supported OE, but most of the bracketry has rusted away by now. Never to be replaced

I always thought ETKA said those supports were for DF engines??

your right they were. my bad.

I would say though that as SS is more brittle than mild steel the prospect of cracking with a heavy box like the twin pipe stainless bluebird attached is real.

to be fair here, My pal was running an unsupported back box. which was a bluebird creation.
Turbo Thomas repaired the cracks ...but they returned soon after, even with extra bracing.
the flanges were half the thickness of silverbullets

it now resides in the shed with a steel zorst in it's place

There will be one on e-bay soon, that i just removed from a customers.
Sounds lovely, but the boxes weigh a ton and aren't supported properly.
I've had to weld it up in the past, customer has had to have it welded up in the past also, he got sick of constantly fannying about with it and asked if I could fit one of mine, which I did.
he can now leave his ear muffs at home.

Found a place locally that will make up my early pipework in stainless for £25 a metre and make whatever bends I need. This coupled with twin kawasaki scorpio boxes should sort mine out for good, but for now, the bike box adaptation seems to be doing nicely.

would love to see some picks when done... did you mean scorpion ? from memory they are after market bike silencer makers.... good exhausts, I have a bent titanium one from a R1 that got squished on a track day.

Sorry, yes Scorpions. Neighbour bought a pair, removed baffles then found himself getting stopped at every corner so hes switched back to stock cans. They seem big enough and very shiney - figure I'll put one each side or may sell other one?



I'm rather enjoying the 'experimental' approach - saves quite a few quid and you end up with a much more unique set up. Not sure I'll get around to it until next summer (money) but cans already have my name on them and for the money he wants, little more than a new stock rustbox - go figure....

Whole systems may well suit anyone who can't or doesn't know how to try out ideas, but heck this is VW land - meccano heaven . I used to make all kinds of things for bugs. My original custom can in the WIKI was just a hunch and it proved its worth, ironing out flat spots and giving a noticeable boost in 3rd.

Why thankyou! I've finished it properly now, complete with ring grooves for more gasket "bite" and the company logo (I'm proud of my work and a right show-off too!)

Sounds fantastic. Nice and beefy at idle, actually gets quieter as you go faster and the revs rise above 2000!
It's really perked up the old thing - I can open the taps at 70 (on gas!) and it just pulls...
Needs better wheel balancing now
P.S. If you go to a Longlife franchise, get a quote on paper. Mine was originally £320 plus £20 for tailpipe all plus vat. When I rang to ask if it was all done and to check the damage, they said "about 500"
"Oh no it's not!" says me. Fitter comes on phone, asks "was that with the downpipes?" as he taps at calculator...Well I did supply the flange..."360 plus vat ok?"

am still in two minds as have this towbar to work around... so decision still not made and van still on drive ! grrr

Went to see them today and they were adamant they have fit their late style exhaust to an early van so I'm booked in.

Do they change the engine mount then or fit their own stuff?.
I'm sure you know about that, but I'm thinking about the cradles for the box that won't fit to early mounts.
