I think I misunderstood - you were assuming your pushrods were for solid lifters, not that your lifters were solid. Still, the offer stands.

So back to my question about seating the rods in the lifters properly then.

vw heritage shows them as 272mm too??? this is getting proper confusing.

the rods are seated properly. If you put slight pressure on the end of a rod that is not seated properly it will just pop into the cup on the follower. There is no chance of it jamming on the edge or being incorrectly seated.

Different engine I think - it's not specifically about the WBX.

I pulled 272mm rods from the 2.1 I'm working on.

So is 271mm correct or incorrect for a hydraulic lifter?

I believe it is correct. It would be good if someone else can confirm though.

No, nor me. Your rocker gear looks the same as mine too, so it can't be a geometry thing. And out of curiosity I tried a spare rod in one of the followers I mentioned, and I reckon you're right - it would be difficult to get it caught on a lip.

rods are ok for length.

what do i do then? shall i just adjust it from biting point to 1.5 turns and see if it starts? im worried i will break it (not that broken things can be broken) @kevtherev

Well clearly there is some thing pushing the rocker too far.
we just have to work out what

you should be able to back off the screw to leave a gap as you know.
So if the valves haven't been moved and the rods are correct, that just leaves the lifter

Just measured my DG pushrods they are 272 ish mm 9mm dia and hollow
hydraulic tappet is 48mm body but the plunger is recessed
if the circlip was missing from the tappet it would add about 3.5mm but may not old pressure
