A local Councillor to West Horsey Guildford had a real bee under his bonnet about a group of lanes in that area. He started a petition at Surrey CC Guildford Local Committee for a Traffic Regulation Order banning vehicle use citing damage.
Because of the relationship the Trail Riders Fellowship has with the rights of way officers the TRF was notified of this fact and asked for a response ahead of the public enquiry needed to impose the TRO. These officers did not agree with the councillors proposal but such was his influence the committee went ahead with it anyway.
Anyway, the TRF drummed up 1000 letters of complaint and co-ordinated a well measured counter attack gathering evidence, advertising what the proposed TRO and badgering the council with freedom of information requests on previously reported damage and incidents.
Yes, excellent example Simon, unfortunately, I feel we are often let down by some 4-wheeler Off-Road groups, even clubs that use and abuse but don't even consider that sort of pro-active response when (perhaps even they have ) things far pushed too
I would very support the concept of license (object being the licence?) being given to a particular group, driving a particular (specific) lane/route, on a particular day/date and being subject to particular conditions or limitations even.. if it were to allow use of special, and as we've said, quite historic, magical, and very special lanes... say once per year per group, but no more.
I really wish this style of accomodation with the 'anti' brigade had been adopted on day one, beceause the writing really was on the wall... it's easier to ban than approve, negate than posit, etc,
I think you get the idea... a compromise, and admittedly a big one, but nevertheless, suitable for Syncronauts who'd only ever want/need/desire to drive a route annually - and certainly not every goddam weekend in the foul weather season just for the heck of it.

Sorry about the delay with the calendar - was waiting for some people to send me full res copies, but have not given up on that and have used the low res versions to get it finished!
The calendar now runs from May 2012 to April 2013 and can be downloaded from here:
http://www.syncronauts.org.uk/about/syn ... -calendars
It is designed to be printed double sided on A4 paper and hangs as a double page spread - picture above dates.
