so i fired her up bit of poping and banging, but she ran up well, for a while, the timing needed some tweking, then i had some problems with the spark, started to trace the ingnition system and for some reason the plastic section that makes contact with the cam inside the dizzy has melted :shock: i have never seen this before has any one got any ideas on what could cause this? i an using the my origional coil (2.1MV) this was from a electronic ingnition i do not know if this would have an affect,

Can't run an electronic ignition coil with points, destroyed a condenser and points doing the same thing on my old squareback. You need a good old Bosch blue coil.

A bit of grease on the cam is often overlooked.
On some distributors there is a felt wiper
that is mounted on the base plate.
You put a few drops of oil on it at service.
Sometimes the felt pad is in the top of the cam
and you lift off the rotor arm to lube it.
It also serves to lube the advance weights and bushing.
The grease will not normaly get to the points contact
as they shield themselves and amounts are small.
and, protected from line of fire (splash).

new bosch blue coil and a new set of pints, and she fired up straight away. set the timing as per the book, and now i have a nice idle at 850rpm, filled and bled the cooling system, what else is there too do but go for a little drive? first thing that felt different was the clutch, lighter and with much more bite. (new clutch and flexy line), did not go too far but the power is very notisable, the torque is what you really notice, the way in which it picks up the power, i still think that the carb needs i tune up as there is a little bit of stuttering when i put my foot down, still think that it is an inpeovement on my old 2.1. even with just the the one silencer it is not as loud as i was expecting although there is quite alot of induction noise, hoping that this will calm down once i sort out some kind of air filter, started to put back the section that i cut away, i welded some taps on to it and have used a nut and bolt on the body side, once the bumper and the toe bar are on it should hide the cuts etc. little bit of faffing around and we should be back to work on monday. :D

Have you got a dwell meter Neil for doing the points?

When I was running Bay windows they would need points fiddling with every thousand miles or so, to keep in peak performance. It's a simple system that works, and if you have a spare with you, and a dwell meter and timing light is very reliable.

i just have a basic timing gun from my old beetle and kamman ghia days, the half of the reason that i went the points route was the simple nature of them although i guess that some of you are thinking that this is a steep back? i have been reading around on electronic ingnition systems, has any got any thought on this product?

Yes, that reads OK, and would be a very worthwhile improvement as far as removing perpetual maintenance worries and retaining performance. Then just down to plug changes and air /oil filters.

Lumenition probably have one of the best reputations, was using one many many years agao, in fact a frightening number now I think about it... they use a star cutter (chopper) wheel through an infra red eye... could get an old Morris A series idling smoothly around 550 rpm with it, which seemed a good indication to me!

That was the original Optronic, I see they now do a cheaper Magentronic (Hall Effect) system too. Seems I should not have let my Optronic go on old Morris, as they now are expensive. I know a chap running a highly tuned 1928 Supercharged MG Vintage Racer, that has a 'hidden' Lumentiion in the distributor :) What the eye can't see the competition can't fret abut .. especially as they all seem to do it!

i`ve been through a couple of luminition systems on the rally car. loads use them, but they do fail. aldon do an ignighter kit that is more compact but i think both these systems run a static dwell period where as most o/e systems incorporate a variable dwell. much better in my opinion especially as these vans tend to be left ticking over for longer periods than say a rally car. if it was me i`d be looking at a standard o/e volvo / bosch system with a spare second hand or even new module on board. lee.

Can't you separate a ignition system from the loom of a later Volvo? points suck big fat hairy donkey knob.
I would rather dry bum diamond hell than have to use points.
