I have only ever been to Scotland in January and in a 2wd van. Funnily enough that is the holiday that convinced me we needed a Syncro, seee it here

That sounds quite an extreem trip jed brings back memories of scotland especially the red squirell campsite did'nt meet the three fingered guy when i went last year

Scotland is lovely but went to Snowdonia last spring and was knocked over by Edward I castles the area seemed more off the beaten track than most of Scotland's west coast and welsh seemed to be first language. Having said all that the North Coast of scotland is just wild

Wish i'd had a T25 when we did Scotland last year! Dont forget to do that electric brae (?) thingy road near Ayr where you seem to be pointing up ( or down) hill, but take off the handbrake and you roll the opposite way! kids love it!!

I'm from clydebank and all I can say is I agree with everything everyone has said,,she is beautiful beyond belief,,especially the west coast,,but the real beauty is that it's one of the only countries never to be conquered by not only Romans but the English,,hehe ; )

If you are sensible and don't need facilities - then wild camping is still quite possible. move on after a night and keep out of the way (away from the big spots) - otherwise the (remaining) small sites around the west coast are still simple and often basic - although there are exceptions.

If you decide to come up - give us a shout - we can give you details of loads of good spots - places to go, things to see. Would help to know if you are two adults or want to entertain kids too. Or PM me for details - we are in Inverness - if you come up - you can't really miss coming through.

And if you come before June - ignore all the talk of Midges. And if it's windy they can't hold on too well....
We live up here and are very rarely bothered by them - but then we don't go out in the wet west coast in July/August when they come out looking for holidaying English folk!

Weirdly - we are heading for the Netherlands in May/June for three weeks. Wife is half dutch and we honeymooned over there on a tandem up the coast and back down inland.....cracking holiday - now with the little ones - may take the tandem with the four year old on the back We have good memories of Texel and the excellent cycle tracks - and some great campsites.

The ferry is £450 for the 4 of us, cabin overnight and the van (Hull or Newcastle - similar price).
The Shetlands from Aberdeen costs the same and is about the same distance.
Compared with the short crossings down South - it is not surprising that it costs more - just look at the distance it covers!

Some years ago a farmer in Scotland observed that midges never went near the bog myrtle plant.
He crushed and brewed a concoction to try out his theory.
It worked so well that he was able sell his idea to Sterling Pharmaceutical who made a repellent cream.
I tried it out at height of the midge season when fishing in Scotland and never got bitten once while the other lads were driven mad.
This was at least 35 years ago.
You can buy it anywhere as patches, candles and cream.

Well, I think Scotland is very intersting. So, next year we will go to Rumania, that is the plan at the moment. Scotland is at this moment the alternative. The year after it could be our next plan. However, Africa is calling as well. But we just dont know that. We will see. But maybe we can do Scotland in a week or so. hahaha. I think it is a two day trip up there and then we have 5 days of driving around there and another two days for going back home. We can manage that.

We will see.

Ahh well - second to Romania.....

"Doing" Scotland in a week sounds like doing Amsterdam in an hour.....possible - but you won't see owt good....

We are just thinking about it all, if we do it right we have around ten days to have a look in scotland. Nothing is sure yet.
But all the pictures and the stories convinced me that scotland is worth to visit. So we will. When, I think there is a goe chance we do so next year.
