Okay it fits

At first I did it up how I felt good, but it was still leaking a drip every couple minutes. I then returned with some pliers and tightened it up to the most I think is safe, no leak

still need to do the driving heat up test but so far looks good! not bad for 7 quid plus post!

Ive got a sump plug tap set, used it many times re coiling the sump plugs on the newer PD TDIs ive got a new PD sump plug aswell, im in Tavistock so if you want it retaped let me know mate

I should have asked whats the length of the thread? Not sure it there would be clearance for it in a waterboxer.

As the OP, I just thought I'd follow up with my eventual solution: bought one of these: http://shop.motorsport-developments.co. ... -347-p.asp.

It is a bit pricey but thought I might as well use a quality bit of kit and do a proper job. £20 is not a lot in the scheme of things.

Asked a garage to tap an M16 thread while tinware was off to replace exhaust. Went straight in with no problems, I'm told. I don't think they needed to do any drilling.

Hopefully that's it sorted for good now. I'll probably get an oil pump as well to avoid taking it out too often, just to be on the safe side. I s'pose it'll need to come out occasionally to wipe any swarf off the magnet.

I had thi exact problem last night, all the thread had gone leaving a hole about 14.2mm, I drilled out 15.3 and tapped out 3/8 bsp and put a bit of ptfe tape on for good measure. Done 30 miles and no leakage. Is a bit scary going at your sump with a drill tho but hey needs must

It's still going strong guys, done an oil change with it too. no leak at all

Helicoils all the way. Gave my almost incompetent sisters a few instructions over the phone and she managed to fit one in less than 10 minutes. As daring as it sounds, tapping into an ally sump is almost child's play as it just requires really light/soft turns when rotating the tap. My first one cost pennies for the bits as I borrowed the kit off my MOT guy that has only done 2 tests for me, so it's not like i'd had the opprtunity to build up a rapport with him, just a really nice guy. Hope that helps, if you could see my sister at work then it would be a real confidence booster for those that are apprehensive. Yes she really is that bad lol.

Working for me too at the moment. I left her ticking over and no leaks. Took her for a long test drive checking regularly. No leaks. Left paper under the van. Will check again in the morning and monitor regularly. Fingers crossed looks to be working OK for now. Thanks for the tip aulday.

Still working. No sign of any leaks.
