Ive used this kind of method a few times before. (remember having a chat with Clive about it ages ago)
Using ratchet straps while on very slippery gradients in amongst trees. You can make quite good forward progress traversing the gradient by using a kind of pendulum action by attaching yourself to a tree up ahead and using the wheel spin to swing you forward (if you see what i mean..?)
Have got out of a few sticky clay, sludgy, stuck amongst nearby trees, tight spots in this way. Works a treat

Looked buttock clenching, especially if the little un was in the van too, just goes to prove things can go wrong very quickly. I have noticed on all the lanes I have driven we are probably the biggest thing that goes down them so the odds are stacked against us really. How did the people with MT's get on? any sliding?

This is the spot where Neil had his escapade - doesn't really show the drop.

Blimey

I especially like Sharon's shots of the tyre tracks leading up to ground 0... I wonder if that was Pete & Sharon's Doka in that situation they could have ratchet strapped the tow bar to a tree and wrapped the winch around another tree at a sharp right angle and pulled themselves out? That is the thing about a winch you might never use it but when you need it you really need it. Its good to annualize stuff like this when its caught on film so well done to Sharon for capturing it. That said I am doing it from the comfort of my house and I know only to well that it doesnt really capture the buzz of the moment.

Jed, Andrew recorded all of the shots for this, all adults were very busy.
Yeah all sorts of different recovery connotations could have been used with the winch available - although we're not going to put ourselves in that position to try.
