Had a brief look for an engine number - it looks pretty gnarly in there - bit of oil and gunk sprayed about but no success.
Have had a chat to the mechanic and we were certain we were working with a DG and all the paperwork I have indicates that is the case.
I cannot check all my paper work cos unfortunately the van broke down mid way through a house move which was a major pain - and half my stuff is at the new place.
Will get it over to the mechanic so I can declare SORN until I get it fixed.
And at that point I will grab an engine code.

Well if it is a DG engine it has DF inletting, which is losing you a lot of power I should imagine

OK. The uncertainty of what I am dealing with here was starting to do my head in... so I got the Haynes manual out. For those peeps like me trying to locate the engine code it is here.
Can understand now why I could not see mine - it was coated in an amazing layer of oily gunk. ha ha ha.
1 baby wipe later and I have it. DG140071
Number plate recognition on a lookup earlier said the van was a DF first use 1985 - my documents say it was first used in 1984.
So my van looks to have a speckled history.

Looks like I am driving a hacked DF with a DG engine.
So - am I opening up a world of pain trying to get this van upgraded to a 2.1 DJ or a 2.0 litre big bore.
Is the correct manifold easy to come by... going to google n all the usual suppliers straight after this post ...
Tx for all the feedback.

nope..... the heads are the difference,, and therefore the inlet manifold, and to-wit carb.
cant fit a df inlet manifold ( and therefore carb) onto a dg head.
so i suggest what we have there is a rebuild...... original dg casing, with df heads, carb and manifold.
anyhow, the df is ok, less numbers, but just as much go in the real world, and df's tend to live longer, cos less thrashing, as they dont peak rev so high with the smaller inlets.....
sorry!

It has new heads on it... and the heads we specced were for a dg... this is pretty confusing. Lots of people lots of knowledge. Really specialist stuff. It is burning my head - I just have to work out the best route to get this vehicle running again with least damage to my pocket and the most reliable long term solution for happy motoring and at the same time happy mechanic. Once I get my receipts I will be able to understand the history a little bit more.
Thanks all.

with all due respect, we are only looking at a picture you posted and going on your descriptions and information, however, it wouldnt be the first time that dg and df was mixed up on paperwork and receipts........
take us a picture with the air intake cap removed, so we can see the carb.........please....

Tx Mocki. Yeah will do at the weekend. The mechanic also has another manifold so will also get a photo of that. Cheers.

Here are 2 shots - my engine minus the air intake - and the code from the inlet manifold. I would be really interested to hear what I really have on my hands here. It looks like I am going to have to go down the route of a new engine because the water leak has turned out to be caused by an incompetent mechanic. They have managed to skid off the stud they were drilling and into my engine block - piercing my water jacket. There is still half a stud stuck in there + the quote for repairs is the same as a recon Vege.
Cheers. NiK.

RIGHT - if that works....it shows the manifold as DG.....part number has been transposed though?
