Here's the low budget option though. 195/80/14 on the original 5.5" steelies. Didn't dare go 205 as they would balloon quite a bit over the rim. Tyre choice in 195/80/14 isn't spectacular either, but better than 185 or 205
185/80/14 rear, 195/80/14 front
I woudn't run different rolling radius front to rear sets up some nasty transmission stresses

Diameters on syncro tyres should not differ by more than 2mm front to rear

Below the 185 front 195 rear bit there once was a picture (which isn't showing at the moment for whatever reason) to illustrate the quite visible difference in size and appearance. Said picture was taken while swapping 195's back to front and using an old 185 as temporary crutch ...I DO KNOW that I'm not supposed to drive with two different diameters

Confused me though, too

ok then ...by popular demand (

) ...here's the piccie again:
185/80/14 "crutch" at the rear, 195/80/14 at the front ...quite a difference in the look I think

205's will go on std rims no problem...
195's are a good compromise though.. slightly taller gearing which doesnt affect the performance too much.. I have a set. (mine is a 1.9 dg wbx) the 205/70r15's "Guyanes" I have do tend to blunt the road performance..

"performance"

.... and a couple of times off road that extra gearing has made for a slight stuggle.. More grunt needed.....

So do the T4 rims need the centres boring out if fitting to a Syncro then? Or just if fitting to a 2WD? I've got a set coming next week, ET 44s. Any recomendations tyre wise? Would like some off road capability but don't want masses of road noise.

I was running T4 rims on mine until today. The centres need to be bored out to fit over the front hub. I had all 4 done so I could rotate the tyres.
This is how much mud I bought back from Bug Jam after 100 miles! We cleaned about the same amount again before we left.
Tyres are 195x15 mud terrain & are too noise for road use. That's why I have taken them off.
I have fitted a set of Porsche Teledials with adaptors for road use.
They do look a bit girlie with the 215/60x15 tyres, but the gearing is back to normal now & quiet as a mouse.
I might have been better off with a 205/70 or a 195x15 road tyre, but this was the quick, cheap option for me.
Many will say don't use adaptors, but unless you are going heavily off road then they will be fine. I still have the standard 14" steels plus the T4 & mud combo, so should be covered for all occasions.

215/60/15 makes your gearing lower than normal by 2%. Standard diameter is 652mm and you have 639mm !! I think those teledials look good

I was in a bit of a rush to get the wheels & tyres sorted. I only picked them up late last night, so a good effort to have them on the van before lunch time today!
I will use it this week end & see how it is. I might look out for some 205/70's, but think I might sell the van soon as I picked up my splitty today.
I have the stock 14" wheels & tyres to back on if all else fails.

Posted a request in the swaps and giveaways forum to try and get a matching 15" merc steel wheel.... figured the Syncro crowd are more likely to have one lying around. If so give me a shout. Also open to just buying one and then selling my odd one!

Any recommendations for the "best" tyre size for my 15" ET31 6" wide Merc steelies (also any info on any bargains out there at the moment!!!)
Want an AT tyre and don't want any interferance issues.
Been looking on the Wiki and searching through previous posts, but can't suss what width and profile combination is the ideal.
Also still looking for a 5th ET31 wheel, which I could swap for an ET37 merc steel if anyone needs to make up a set!
Cheers
Matt
