Also some of the other bits, passenger step etc came from JustKampers.

Funny, Leo and I were only talking about our van last night. We ground to a halt due to being skint and not being able to get hold of that damn rear panel!
The bloke that said he had a van with it on, never got back to us, even after multiple phonecalls and messages on here! So, we're still stuck at the same point.
I think we're going down the workshop sometime in the next week to have a look at what we can get on with until we find the panel we need.

They allways have vans in, just get down there and draw a line round the bit you want and they cut it out/off for you, got me a mint complete rear which I will be grafting on v soon ,

A tiny bit from the other night.

Taking off what was left of the door seal channel. At the time I didn't notice how close Leo was to the fuel filler with that grinder!

Don't ask me why Leo didn't cut that hole square and make up a rectangular patch. I did suggest it but he insisted on doing it his way

Not sure if your still looking for body bits, but I just gave my old T3 as part payment for aload of work I had done on me new van.
Steve, who has took the van, told me he not sue what he's doing with it, but he might be breaking it, anyways here's his web page, he might have bits your looking for, (if you are of course)

Cheers mate and thanks to everyone else that has given us advice about where to get a panel from. We are going to a bloke tonight to cut out the bit we need from a scrap van.

Last nights progress.

Leo cut the patch from sheet steel.


Trimmed to fit his odd shaped hole.



Welded in and cleaned up.


Zinc primered.


In the meantime I had been prepping the seal channel.


I drilled holes along its length.


Then we held it upto the van and plug welded it on. Like so:

All done!


Seal back in. Fits perfect



Thats another job done! Hopefully tonight we'll get that last panel we need and can get on with welding it in next week.

Looks like your doing a good job BUT check them sparks flying all over what looks like used engine oil Burns well that stuff

Cheers for the concern mate. Those tubs of oil have been there for ages, I hadn't even thought about the sparks flying in them! Think I'll move them next time im down there, lol.

We drove down to Potters Bar last night and got this:

Same here. Would've had some windows out by now if I had access to a nice big shed like that.

The cold weather is hampering my restoration attempts a lock up be great, trying to vactan is this cold weather is pointless

Hey everyone.

Time for an update

After fitting the main panel, we were left with a gap inbetween the panel and the rest of the van were the inner arch should be. Hard to photograph, but if you look at the photo long enough you can make sense of it.


Its a thin gap with a lovely curve down one end. Nice and tricky to make a panel up then!
Here goes. First we made the easy flat bit by cutting a strip:


Marking a line along where it meets the outer panel and clamping it in 'The bending Machine™'


Bent and cleaning up:

Next was to make the curved piece:

Next step was to get the end panel in.
Here is what we started with:


So we whipped that out and trimmed it carefully.



and cleaned up and trimmed the new bit ready to go in:



Checked for fit. Looking good





Next time we will weld in that panel, then all we have to do is put in the very lower piece and thats it for welding

Also, while Leo was welding, I took a look at the started motor to try and diagnose our intermittent starting problems.
The wiring is a mess, with a collection of different crimps crushed onto the ends of the wires, so I will need to sort that out. Here is what the starter itself looks like!


That first picture really doesn't show how rusty it is. It looks like a jab with a screwdriver will put a hole in the side of it!

Even so, I cleaned up all the connections and the wires on the solenoid and cleaned up the face where it earths to the gearbox. I put it back on the van and still nothing. Next time I will charge the battery for a bit before I try, im not sure its even charged.
I have a couple of vw starters from when I had a Mk2 Polo, so I might be able to swap over a solenoid to see if that makes a difference.


How many wires should we have going to the starter? We have three going to the +ve stud and one going to a spade connection on the solenoid.
