Excessive smoke can also be caused by restrictions on the air inlet tract to the engine. Make sure the air duct from the grille down through the rear quarter panel is still OK. Sometimes they collapse when the wire mesh rusts away.

Just looked it up and it seems sight tests are only for diesel vehicles before 1980 (not going to correct the guy who does my mot)

Seems if you are changing head gasket and valve seals you are well ahead of me on the mechanical side so can't offer much help apart from I also had my turbo changed and done a lda refurb and van still chucks smoke when cold or on start. Have you checked the tappet clearance?

My winter fun job will be a fuel tank replacement then refurb of injectors as I I've got metal fragments in the fuel :shock:
