Standby - with the bracket removed from the dizzy the shaft seats properly and now the rotor arm won’t turn. I am beginning to suspect that my very mangled bracket has caused the dizzy to disengage from the drive gear, therefore no end of sparks or fuel or timing would work as the dizzy wasn’t turning anything....

I am right in thinking late DGs don’t have a Woodruff Key or is that me dreaming?

BTW - I’m sure you both should be doing something more important than typing messages to me - like paid work or something.....
I really appreciate it, thank you

Glad you didn't panic.
If the bracket is preventing the dizzy engaging in the drive slots then you wouldn't have any proper drive to the dizzy.
Can you refit the one you borrowed from Paul (I assume his has a bracket on), alternatively, you need to unmangle your plate. I think you've now identified the problem.
You can then confirm everything is fine by rotating the engine by hand with cap off and watching the rotor arm rotate.
Don't forget when doing final fitment that no 1 needs to be on compression stroke TDC.

Yep, turned engine by hand and for two rotations of the crank the drive gear rotated once.
The spare dizzy didn’t have a bracket and I think that mine is too far gone as it looks to have been twisted in various directions. When removed the pinch bolt was bent about 30degrees.
Just messaged Mick at NWVW to see if he has a straight on

Surely you have a big hammer to get you going, you're hardly going to make it worse

In my current frame of mind, wielding a big hammer may have dire consequences for the van in general....

getting there
just stick the dizzy in with no bracket align it and get it started
it will make you feel so much better
can't really drive it far like that but it should get you back on your drive
I said I have a bracket you can borrow if you can't get one quick

Cheers Paul (again!)
Just bought one off Mick - said it’ll be in the post today.
Good idea with getting it started - you’re right, it will make me feel significantly better.
Lunchtime and then back out with renewed energy.....fingers crossed please everyone

He lives! Back on the driveway.
Interestingly, not with my coil, only with Paul’s ignition system.
Should have a new coil arriving in the next couple of days so we’ll see what happens with that.
Better get on with swapping all Paul’s parts off my van......

excellent.
two fault then, something wrong with your coil or ignition switch perhaps and a duff bent dizzy clamp plate, while fiddling with it on the campsite the dizzy was perhaps dislodged. completely.
try 12V feed direct to your coil first.

Morning All - new coil and replacement dizzy bracket just delivered. Carb cleaned up last night and battery charged. New ignition switch on standby if required - looking forward to it being back to normal by the end of the day!
