I used freeSSM at the weekend with an ODB cable from eBay, it connected to the ECU and read the code history but nothing else. I think the features available depend on the ECU. It's free so worth a try.

First test drive went very well , couple of tiny coolant leaks at some joins so prob the jubilee clips need a tweak but all in all very happy

With only being about the second or third time iv driven it I can see why there is so much love for these vans as I was smiling the whole time and felt at home behind the wheel even though I'm not a van driver Normally ,, only downside is the brakes are still quite bad , it now has the servo assist but there still very bad ,,, anyone know of any big brake kits that are just bolt on ??? Of course I'd prefer Subaru if there is anyone doing the fronts as iv found subarugears do a rear setup but not any front that I can see
Any help on the brakes would be awesome

What's your definition of bad? You'll hear many of us saying how good they are once set up properly.

I still need to get to a meet or somthing so I can jump into another van or two as iv got no reference with them really as this is the only one iv ever been close to lol,
I wasn't expecting them to be great but if I was going down a hill at 20mhp I don't think I'd be able to stop it at all ,, I'm not driving it at the mo other than testing so its not a big problem just needs looking into

Love it! All you need now is a Mighty Car Mods 'Chopped!' sticker in the window.

As I help run my own Subaru club I'm sure a few stickers will find there way onto the van

A full

overhaul of standard brakes including hoses should see you right

Fit the later (post-85?) steering uprights and the later brakes with an E30 BMW servo, that will make it stop.
I had an EJ22 in a bus with the early Girling brakes, they were OK in a tin-top but you needed strong legs.
