Surely,

The purpose of the oil tower is to allow gases / pressure to be vented through the filter while at the same time preventing ingress of anything from the engine bay from getting back in?
So to that end, if you blow in the end of the towers little pipe then you should meet resistance and no air should get into the engine moving parts.

nah, if you have anything in the carb pancake it will be inside the engine before the sump, either way it should not be there and will cause damage, there is an airfilter to keep stuff out.

As I'm servicing the van tomorrow and after reading this thread, I thought I might clean my tower over night (oo er). Before I remove it, is it actually worth doing? and is it a difficult job to remove/put back on? I have a spare gasket at the ready should I go for it.

If I do clean it out – what difference will it make, if any, to the running of the engine?

Cheers

Cleaning your tower may be the death of it.
I poured petrol or white spirit or something like that in mine thinking it would disolve any old oil and it probably disolved the membrane.
