Do you ever run on petrol?

Yes I have to, I'm only getting 120 miles odd out of a 60l lpg tank (48 available) tank and there aren't many LPG stations close to me and even then the pumps can be faulty. Also wanted to double check whether I should be blocking the vacuum advance pipe when its off the vacuum advance.

Yes I do otherwise you have an airleak and it doesn't run well but what's important is the revs, no point messing any more than you have to with the revs so block the pipe helps ( carb end obviously  )

If you run petrol then stick to 5 deg.

I have an auto 1.9 DG my timing is set to 8 degrees and when I connect my vacuum at 900rpm it moves to around 20 degrees but it doesn't pink so I always assumed it was OK, But I also have a 60 ltr tank from which I get about 170-180 miles and on a run once 220. 120 would be very disappointing as mine is a heavy autosleeper hi top. At 8 degrees it runs fine on petrol also.

Hi 123 jn. Points and rotor arm cleaned, dizzy oiled all ports cleaned on carb. New vacuum hose and running and got a srobe with advance which is much more accurate. Van now running very similar to yours and I'm happy with the way it sounds and runs. I had forgotten that my thermostat had been removed. Will refit and that should help the mpg a bit. Thanks to everyone for their advice, I low a lot more about the timing system and how it works that I did three days ago.

That's the spirit.
Understanding the van makes the love go deeper. :D

Mine too 23 degrees on the dial but that may not be exact as its not a calibrated tool.

When you think about it the max advance quoted for the dizzy vac of 16 degrees will be on top of your preset timing so 5 plus 16 is 21

id think idle would be pretty much max vac as throttles are closed
