Is'nt that the original VW sticker for hydraulic lifters

I think you could be right. The sticker on my van isn't complete, but now having seen the whole thing it does look like it's saying not to gap the tappets. Anyhow, my van has definitely got solid lifters so it's worth confirming what was fitted 5 years ago, and whether it was done properly.

Assumptions are the mother of all %^"* up's, it does'nt say on the bill what type and how many followers/lifters were fitted.

Enquire what was fitted?

Mick.

bill was from 2009 and the last owner wont know and from talking with the garage the mechanic has now retired
information is impossible to find out, it wouldn't go over 55mph before these were changed.

Yeah to what ralf says. Unfortunately a major part of their charm is that they are fundamentally crap due to age and 1980's tech vs modern cars. Will you get there is no longer just down to traffic and directions.. It's also down to your skills at road side/home repair, how much you've spent and also luck and the personality of the van. Even if you fix this problem there will be others. My van is finally going back on the road Friday, I want to go camping this weekend - my wife suggested the new forest - me, hmmm bit far (70 miles!) are we going to make that?!.

The van will adjust your expectations for you - mine are probably too low now, yours are probably too high! It's a nice fun vehicle though and mine at least has a soul that I don't think I'd see in a more modern van but I know to expect trouble and either just skirt around it (my loose gear change!)or knuckle down and fix it.

The sticker is indeed a "No adjustment needed"
I would hope the lifters were replaced like for like
Because without the solid lifter cam fitted you have a lemon.
:D

it doesnt go fast (55mph) but it doesnt run like a lemon...so one can presume the tappets were done correctly.

back from mechanics who didn't charge me for their time just gave me good honest advice...

Did usual checks on all the usual suspects all fine...

"We could rebuild the carbs but don't think that will make that much difference" "its 30yrs old" "got lots of wood/furniture inside" "big high top" "runs really sweetly"
"enjoy your van don't chase the extra 10mph or waste your money on something that cant be solved, plenty of garages are willing to take money for nothing "

and the mechanics were Irene & Gary Waltham Abbey (thanks)

all in all I guess I have no choice....if you disagree Speak now, or forever hold your peace!

Well either gravity is stronger in London or the air is thicker.
My van is a high top, fully campered out, with a full water tank, two mountain bikes on the back, a weeks worth of beach toys, + me & the girlfriend and +65mph on the speedo isn't a problem.

But if you can learn to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Then there's nothing wrong with taking the A & B roads to get where you want to go.

Your choice! You've spent a lot of money going round in circles to get the same result. Time to stop now. Get on with your holidays or sell. Make a decision man!
