...and by the time I got them in and got the rocker gear back on they're all spongy again!!!! Hopefully there's not too much air in them and they'll pump up nicely. Only problem now is finding that all the rocker screw threads are stripped on one set of rocker gear after some idiot mechanic has over tightened them. All the suppliers have them for nearly £5 each!!!!!!!!!!
I am seriously getting pissed of now. It's yet another week without the van. I've also found two rust holes under the arches that will need welding for MOT as they're near the seatbelt mounts...

Pick up a complete s/h rocker assembly. I wouldn't waste money on new tappets.

Hi Guys
So I bought some telescopic pushrod tubes and adjusting screws/nuts and a couple of new tappets.
I had filled the new tappets with clean oil under pressure from a syringe and they were rock hard. However even left immersed under oil they still went soft. I had hoped that there would be no air locks since stored under oil but they still seem very clicky. I'll readjust the tappets tomorrow.
Unfortunately the clacking/knocking noise is still there (along with the new tappet clicking) but what is interesting is they are at the same frequency. I'm guessing this is a good indication it's valve train rather than crank.
I adjusted the tappets to 1.5 turns from just touching (cold) but there's loads of conflicting info on this even in this forum. Advice appreciated!
Stoo

Stu,
for hydraulic tappets, bit of background reading for you, it'll take an hour or so but well worth the effort
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/HydraulicLifters.html
http://www.type2.com/library/engineg/hydral.htm
http://www.ratwell.com/mirror/www.bosto ... ulicll.htm
Read them in the order given and don't worry that sometimes they refer to different VW engines, the hydraulic lifter principles are the same across the engines.
Cheers,
MM

I had a similar noise. Turned out the breather pipe was perished so had collapsed slightly meaning bore wasn't right along its length. This apparently was causing increased pressure in engine. Replaced hose and noise did stop. Don't know if the pressure was preventing hydraulic from lifting tappets correctly. Just my tuppence 'orth.
