Lloyd - just get out there and see what happens. You'll end up doing what you want when you want, which for me is totally the point when going on these trips.
Camping anywhere because it's closer to your route home is not a good reason. Driving way out of your way to go somewhere breathtaking....that's a good reason!

I get what your saying, and i probably didnt really phrase it right. If we go to Almalfi it will leave us 5 days (ferry on the 5th day) which means about 300 miles a day drive. I've started to worry it could turn into what feels like a mad dash for the ferry. Just typing out that previous post has made me realise, going from Rome, up to the Dolomites through the black forest will feel much more of holiday right up to the point we get the ferry home.
I'm very new to this travelling business, and its easy to get carried away and leave yourself a massive drive home. I think we have a nice rough route now, where the whole 3 weeks will feel like a holiday.

If it counts for anything, Ive not once had a leisurely drive to the ferry.
Always stay somewhere nice til the last minute and drive 12hours to catch the boat home. I almost prefer it that way rather than spending a couple of days in spots across France that are not really of interest. But that's me.
