Then the mammoth bodywork prep starts...

Ermie - really take your time on that prep. Painting takes minutes but any bad prep will look twice as bad after!

Hi mate....I promise that I will do my best...just not sure that the best will be anywhere near good enough!

ps - the sliding door is virtually damage free....is it ok to do the door first? My need this for motivation, as I fear I will have no finer prints left with all the sanding I have got to do!

Yes Emma, do that sliding door. Don't make the paint too thick or you'll be disappointed. Think carnation milk!

just watched the video on the wiki lads,and i think they put a second coat on an hour after the first,is this ok to do as i have to fetch all the side windows out of marladys van and would like to get a nice thick coat of paint on before i have to refit the windows,also how many days after would it be ok to refit the windows as she normally goes to work in it..........cheers

Might as well try this technique on them both - thinking orange might be a good choice. If I've committed myself on here I've got no choice but to press on with it now!

That was my rather stilted commentary on there our kid. It was a very hot day so by the time we completed one circuit round the bus, it was ready for a second coat but do not underestimate how much hard work it is in heat. We did mention in the video that white was a killer in full sun too - the glare was unreal. It was ChickenKoop's first ever attempt in the video, with encouragement from myself and camera, so just shows, anyone can do it.

Allow at least 2 days to refit windows in these temperatures although 4 days might be safer as lots of coats in one session can be quite soft underneath.

cheerz for that owdblade,ah berra goo get some paint nar n nip the local scrappy for an owd bonnet to practice on,im goin to do the van in me garage with the doors shut so selective lighting should stop the glare as i am throwing on the boggo white,just hope me welding and filling skills havent dried up like the newky has...............................

bit of advice please...paint arrived today...but has a sticker with the colour on, with a warning "poor opacity pkease use rustoluem tinted primer" - or something like that.....

do I need to worry?

Hmm, first time I've come across that. Depends what colour you're painting over. If its not far off what you have now, dont worry. If it was yellow over red it might be a prob though.

I have everything ordered and finally going to get started today. Thanks Covkid for taking the time to make the Wiki and get me inspired! Spent a weekend taking out rust and Vactaning. I just wanted to check a couple of things:

1. Do you need to use 800 every time for flatting back? Or just the first coat? I could only get 600 from B&Q

2. I couldn't find too much info on the final polishing. Do I basically just get a tin of Brasso and a rag and wipe the Van down after the final coat?

Use your judgement I'd say. Lot of wet and dry isn't even graded these days - 600 should be ok I think but 800 was closer to 1000 and took less paint off. Use a LOT of water.

Yes to get perfect finish you need to flat layers between but many have managed with just 2 layers of paint -depends on colour you use, over what, and how good a job you do with the roller.

The brasso was more an example. Its very similar to T-cut but there are many finishing preparations around. You may well find that if layers are flatted back and you've become fairly good at rollering and have the mix right, a final polish won't even be needed. I'm sure others on here will testify to that one.
