If I can get 200kg of XT660Z onto the back of my Doka, getting the KTM on the back of a Single Cab would be a piece of pi$$, even with the extra few inches of height of a Syncro :D

I'd still quite like a Syncro Doka, but the 2WD gets me as far as the rally paddock, so I figure the extra grand or two it would have cost is better spent on the bike than the 'support vehicle' :D.

That LT 4x4 is all manner of awesome.

One of these looks like it might be fun as well:

Love those Unimogs....but they're a bit big, don't you squash a lane as oposed to drive IN a lane with a Syncro?

These threads always seem to come around to the same conclusion:

There's nothing quite like a T3 syncro for all-round versatility and usability coupled with ease of parts supply. What else is out there that fits the bill for camping and squeezing down UK lanes, while we're still allowed to?

Lets start with the obvious ones:

T5 syncro by Seikel. £££££ and wold you go laning in it?

Delicia 4x4. Jap import, not as spacious as a syncro, worries over parts supply? Big front overhang unless lifted. Lee will correct me here!

Land Rover Series 2B/FC101. Not bad, no lockers unless aftermarket. Similar sized but agricultural with a cramped, noisy, hot cab. A generation before the T3. Prodigious thirst!

Pinzgauer. Very capable because it's a military vehicle. Ok so you can have a 6x6 variant but expensive and hellish to work on apparently.

T r a n s i t County 4x4. Included for completeness but crap by all accounts.

Iveco Daily 4x4. You're not going to get excited by the looks now, are you?

Merc. Sprinter 4x4. Don't know how well these work off tarmac. Engines get injector "black death" even when serviced properly.

Volvo C303/304. Going up a little in size now, again very capable with portal axles and 3 diffs (all locking) but we're back to the spares situation. 6-cylinder petrol unless derv converted. Getting old.

Let's not forget the LT 4x4! Like the Volvo, a bit wide for laning but great for "compact" overlanding it seems. Drivetrain spares expensive/rare?

Any number of wrong-sider F o r d, Chevy 4x4 imported V8 rot-boxes...I'm struggling to think of anything else!

I was following the 4x4 "van" bodied line of thought, 110's don't count! Nearly forgot my Austrian friend's all-weather runabout, FWD with a decoupler for the rear axle:

Blimey ..... a 4x4 Sherpa. I remember there were 4 of those built for evaluation by the British Army. I used to own FEP 11 which was Fully Engineered Prototype 11 fitted with a BMC diesel and a developement Recaro cylinder head!
