There is nothing more satisfying than cleaning a crusty hub. I popped over to Lloydys house last week to show him how to change the rear bearings on his 16" Syncro and his were exceptionally crusty. He can now do the other side himself and show someone else, they can then show someone else and thats what CampervanCulture is all about right?

Jed, it was a great help, thanks. Im sure I first saw it via the wiki, maybe it was a link to your site? Anyways, its on you tube too, so that helps everyone else too. It's a satisfying job alright, but why couldnt I just do the bearings, and not progress to all the other stuff Im now doing on the old bus!!!

In fact, was thinking of advertising for a few, getting a bit morose sitting here with all these spotless gleaming hubs, ah well, c'est la vie

'spose I could always pour a nice tumbler of Glenlivet, swish it a round a bit and then savour it for a good half hour

.. rather than stay sitting here bored without any crusty hubs to get stuck into. Tough innit !

Wheel bearings replaced this morning. Another job ticked off!
I followed advice here and used 'stud/bearing fit' for the races into the hubs.
Question though... is it recommended to use the same stuff on the stub axle, at the two points where the axle fits inside the races?





...now to go grind those suspension spring seats off....

As for the 'vertical play' - no idea yet, as by the time that issue was drawn to my attention (per your earlier comment) i'd already taken the things apart, and I won't know or sure until I put them all back together again....which is now time dependant on the trailing arms welding/refurb progress. But I will post how I get on, fingers crossed!

update:

A tad rusty when the old spring plates removed!


A couple of these reinforcing plates were made for me by a local engineers ( a MUCH neater job than I could have done in my garage!) which will be welded onto the trailing arms before the new spring plates are welded on:


The arches have had a little TLC too - Dinitrol, including the jacking points which had very little rust to show for their 27 years!


Can't wait to get this all finished, as having van withdrawal symptoms!

..first time Ive used it (having always used Waxoyl and 'underseal' before - Waxoyl eventually wears off due to the rain + grit it endures and the underseal ends up with moisture behind it somehow!!!) - This Dinitrol stuff went of lovely with a paint brush - I reckon I might be doing my complete undersides before too much longer. yet another great 80-90 recommended product!

I use a lot of that RC900 (spray) and RC800 (brush)... I test everything on allotment wheelbarrows that get exposed to everything + shit, shite and shat

Glad to assist... also, am only down the A23 from you, so when you need a hand...
So far the whole job has taken a month, but that is mainly due to only getting to grips with it at weekends, and doing FAR more refurbing than was probably actually necessary!!
I picked up the trailing arms from the welders today - they are smart, and I will post pics tomorrow,,

Ok, so I have now collected the old trailing arms from Doug at Doug's VW Works (thanks for that heads up Seamus). Top job of seam welding on the reinforment plates (thanks Ricardos) and new spring seats (thanks Brickwerks). The arms will be going off to be galvanized this week. Once back, they will be fitted with new bushes and ancilliaries. Then its just rebuild everything that's been dismantled during this latest epic! (Remember, all this started with just one wheel bearing - be warned! lol).
Got new spring packing plates (the recommended ones from Brickwerks which are actually T4 upper ones, but fit a treat and have the moulding for the spring 'pigtails' on them)....




Lastly today, Ive fitted the dowel pins in the new brake backplates, done a little more Hammeriting, and also rebuild the CV joints, boots and driveshafts....


....also bought all the new hi tensile mounting bolts from VW to put this lot back together, so roll on next weekend

Quick question - how/where do you apply the Bearing Seal...? To the bearing outer shell or to the housing?

Have my bearings, the bearing seal (Loctite 641), a scaffold pole and a fat bloke.. just need my t-bar and 46mm socket to arrive and I'm ready for a weekend of fun!
