Just been out and got reversing lights working - another irritating thing sorted.

Now the evenings are drawing out its going to be easier to get on as well - what I would give for for a workshop big enough for a Westy!! But then Jed does everything on his drive!

The drive will have another Westy on in the morning and a VC will be changed adding another circle to the oil stain collection. My drive has now got more oil patches than clean areas, I am seriously considering just throwing oil over the whole lot to tidy it up a bit

It is handy having a double drive to work on and being on a main road you dont have to be as considerate as you would if you lived in a cul-de-sac. Its good conditioning working on an angle outside for repairs on the road while doing my BIG TRIP one day.

Currently I'm trying to shorten the list by having a go at leisure electrics - see this thread https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=99043" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and by getting stuck into an engine rebuild - see this thread: https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Got the CO detector (purchased from lloydy) fitted yesterday and the Propex arrived today so that's prompted me to get the leisure electrics sorted.

Busy times

Well, the engine rebuild is progressing slowly but at leaast in the right direction. Just waiting to see whether I am going to have to get a compete new set of pistons and liners which will make a big hole in the budget.

One job that I have made some headway on is getting the leisure side electrics sorted. Everything now runs from one fuse box that takes its power from the leisure battery. I've put in wiring for maplight, stereo, extra 12v socket, CB, Propex, fridge / waterpump, a Zig battery monitor, all interior lighting. While doing this I had the fridge out for better access and tried to get it running on gas. Spent hours on it no avail  - think I'm eventually going to join the compressor fridge gang. It makes sense anyway although I'd rather be spending any money on engine bits at the moment. Anyway the b@r steward is back in and still only working on 240 and 12 volt.

All good fun though and looking forward to a few days at the end of the week on a moor near here doing a bit of wild camping and walking - got to keep using the bus for what its intended for. :ok

This is what the list looks like now:

Engine
Build new engine - WORK IN PROGRESS

Other Mechanical
Sort VC (failed open) and recent loss of difflocks and decoupler. DONE
Change brake fluid (could be fun as the bleed nipples don't look like they've been opened for a long time)
Check / refurb / renew CV joints
Replace springs and sort out shocks
New bushes on front suspension
Usual maintenance on current engine + compression test (Forth Bridge job!)

Electrical
Sort out the rats' nest that is the wiring around the leisure battery (lots of people have played with this over the years I think) DONE
Fit second 12v socket DONE
Fit new ICE headunit
Fit CB (and sort out ariel) 1/2 DONE
Remake earth on n/s front indicator
Fit KC Daylighters spots and fogs (ebay purchase with complete looms)
Replace knackered heater blower (new one on the way from Brickwerks)
Fit individual relays to headlights (as per Wiki) and rewire
Wiring for oil pressure and oil temp guages
Sort non working heated rear screen and rear washer.
Sort non working horn and replace it with something that sounds less wussy DONE

Body
Fit wheel arch liners DONE
Fit new roof canvas DONE
Underseal rest of underneath
Waxoyl doors, tailgate, cavities etc
Sort out why windscreen wash reservoir leaks when its filled up
Wash and polish

Interior
Make new battery covers (to replace black painted plywood monstrosities currently in place) 1/2 DONE
Tidy kickboard of rear seat
Fit CO and smoke detectors CO DONE
Get fridge running on gas ??????
Buy and fit Propex 1/2 DONE
Sort / renew 240v system which is 25 years old

It could get quite depressing when you look at how much needs doing but I guess I've had old VWs all my adult life and you get used to it - although owning a Syncro does add another dimension! Cooper please take note and remember when it is all working its the best fun!
