are you still sure this isn't just coldness, was there clouds of white smoke behind as it fired up and cleared?
I dont think its the cold as it allways started first time winter or summer.I must of done a couple of miles with engine running as i was pulled along with a towing bar ( great thing to have )
When it bumped it would keep going aslong as i had foot on the gas then die if i let revs drop
Cant wait to find out what it is

The fuel-lever (throttle lever) may have slipped on the splines and be nowehere near 'registered'
Just a guess, probably wrong, but something is well 'out of kilter' as diesels usually will idle if nothing else
You might have a look for registration datum marks on the top of the fuel lever's rod (splined).. there are usually several datum scribe marks. Once lost it isn't too easy to re-register the fuel-lever.

I have spoken to the garage today and its up and running
He has said that there was a few places letting air in to the fuel pump and fuel filter so he put jubilee clips on fuel filter and some of the return lines and also tightened up one ov the delivery valves on the pump.He also said that it was running a bit lumpy for a couple of minutes then settled down and maybe the glow plugs should be checked and also the pump timing could be a little out and could do it.I will be getting the timing belt done soon so might get the pump timing done after the belt timing.
the main thing is its sorted
Thanks for all the advice guys
John

That doesn't sound too bad... maybe in luck, sortof...
They certainly don''t like air anywhere in the system, suction side or pressure side! Didn't I mention that

Just a quick update
When i got the van back after a couple of days i noticed a leak just above the pump camshaft looked like it was coming from the nut there.
Spoke to the specialist and he said the only way to sort it properly would be to overhaul the pump at a cost of £430 just to overhaul not take of and replace
I spoke to simon at brickwerks and he said the camshaft wares and the seal gets Fooked
So i decided to find a used pump witch i have now thanks to Keith on the club For Sale section and the van is booked in wednesday to replace timing belt aux belts and change over pumps at a cost of

£240

Just to be sure, presuming they used 'fuel hose clips' and not jubilee clips, which distort and do not clamp a flex fuel hose evnly enough to prevent leaks at small diameters. Glad you're now sorted with good advice coming from several sources.
