Cruz...you're right there matey...very easy to forget VW as so many parts are now obsolete but you are ansolutely right as occasionally VW are selling 'Genuine' cheaper than the aftermarket boys...not very often admittedly but it's always worth checking before opting for the often lower quality aftermarket part.
My used pipe cost me £20 and I'd picked it up at Stanford Hall 2010, just never got around to fitting it. I knew that I'd got a bit of rust on the original but I was caught out by how severe the corrosion was in an area that I couldn't easily see.

Good point and guilty as charged

Aside =
I once went to VW for a pair of front discs and a bee sting aerial for our Scirocco.
Discs = around £12 each
Bee sting aerial (just the screw in whip bit) = £62
No sense there, I would have happily paid £30 each for the (vented) discs.
But £62 for the whip = silly and I doubt anyone ever bought one at that price.
All very odd and silly imho.

Hi All, 1st post here, but have owned my 2.1 Carat for over 10 years. Tried to Join this Club 80/90 some years ago, but it was such a dismal failure, I didn't bother trying too hard. Anyhoo Had exactly same pipe fail, but was lucky because I was just scraping rust from the exhaust surface nearby, and happened to catch the pipe with my wire brush, it just disintegrated, and dumped coolant all over the place.
I ordered one from JK, but have to be honest, was not impressed with the build quality, no reinforcement at thermostat end, and poorly bent. Returned for a refund, and got OEM from eBay for 70 petrol tokens.
Sadly a week after MOT, and repairs to cooling system and exhaust, seems the auto box has failed, so suspect will be posting lots of queries on that topic.

mine sprung a tiny pin hole on the top of the straight bit that sent a jet of water into the engine bay ..took me ages to find it as it was such a fine jet you could barely see it and it had turned to steam when it hit the engine!
