Hi All
Havent been on the forum for a while..been thinking of taking a holiday in France in the camper, but have never driven 'over there' before. Very apprehensive TBH! Would it be safer to just take a short foray from the tunnel/ferry to check it out,or is it really as easy as Ive been told over there?

After 5 minutes each day it's second nature, for those five minutes it's easy with a second glance just to make sure.

Do it, enjoy it. You know it makes sense

Roads are less busy, but theres plenty of greatcamp sites in the north if you dont want to travel too far. Id avoid the far north east as it aint the nicest part of France

Metz is beautiful ! :cheese Most small French towns have their individual but distinctly French character, the issue is the weather which can be British in temperament

Also, don't try and drive too far in one day, use the Aires to split up a journey and there should always be something interesting nearby to keep all entertained.

First time we went to France, we booked through a Eurocamp style company and stayed inland in a small village in the Vendee. Loved it! St Ettiene du Bois - lots of castles and attractions nearby.

Use your brains and a good map as well as the satnav, many peage (toll motorways) have a corresponding N road often great long straight roads with the occasional small village or town (where the speed limit's 50 klicks) and it's a much more relaxing way to experience France. IF however you have a great many miles to cover like we did last summer the peage is a quick way to eat up the miles.

I live in London, and it takes me longer (if You include a pi$$ stop and a Burger King at Warwick services) to drive to Birmingham than it does to roll off the ferry at Calais. Aload of fuss about nowt

Not been to Metz so may give it a go sometime. Its the character im really getting at, ive just found the north east to be a less interesting, less 'French' area. Having said that it still beats North Wales anyday!

I agree re the weather there and the climate stats would back you up. Oddly Brittany is different even though its a northern region, much sunnier, particularly the south east.

We stayed on the camping municipale - but good job we booked as they turned the woman in front of us away! Fabulous site right on the river side and Metz itself is beautiful as Ian says. Very historical and well worth a couple of days' stay if you are in that direction. Great drive down from there to the Black Forest - lovely countryside and very pretty villages.
