Remove the column cover and then look at the column as you push the steering to see where it knocks

Mine used to knock when I went over rough ground, like cobbles, and it was due to the two worn steering column bushes

Depends on what rubber bushes you think we're talking about :) we're talking about two different sorts, those column grommet ones and the rubber plate UJs further down the shaft

Probably not I'd say though.... others can help more hopefully

PS. Location UK! hehe, can we be a more specific? Like Northamptonshire :wink:

Uk was near enough i thought.

Had a look at mine again and it looks like the copper bearing in the top of the key unit that has worn it.
Replaced the key unit with another and it still does the same, en though it is a different bearing in that unit.

Is this a common thing on syncro's as the steering wheel gets more pressure exerted on it when steering slow etc. ?

The replacement key lock unit was a secondhand unit and could have had the same fault.
