Nope
Air leaks, dirt in the carb/poorly adjusted carb and choke mech, incorrect timing, vac advance not working will...

That's the servo vacuum hose that will severely effect the running if it's leaking.

Which like Ian and aiden said is more than likely the cause of your high HC problem..

thank you all. outside to have another tinker with this braid of fun. if i wrap a shopping bag around it, if it's poorly should it tighten up the revs and give me an audible up in revs/sign that it's shot?

Mate stop wrapping shopping bags or anything else round it, just spray with WD40...you will soon know when revs pick up

Hi there, sent pm as well. By the looks of that carb on the outisde I would suggest that as well as replacing your servo vac pipe n the L/H side of the manifold you would do well to get a carb re-build kit, gaskets and cleaner and spend a nice couplle of hours one evening with a)beer and b) tools. Take it slow and careful and you'll be repaid with another set of problems.......I mean a lovely , smooth running bus- and the knowledged that u don't pay someone else who knows less than you how to fix her. I'm not in any way dissing mechanics, only the one or two dodgy ones in Hackney who claim knowledged of these faithful old beasts. Tim

i agree, i said that only today, i would only be paying someone else to probably discover how to do things i can do myself. today the new bulbs for the headlights stumped me but i got there in the end, and that's the fun of it. previous to this i have been working on a morris minor and learned a fair bit about fuel and spark on her. the carb on that was a little more simplified than this bus tho!

before i start to get the bits together, are there any mods for these servo pipes or recommendations for better pipes than the oem, and the mod that angelo did to his van with a different type of pipe from the carb and a fuel filter? is that possible that i can do that?

PM your address, as I still have some of the hose left from when I did mine (why just Kampers sell it in 2.0m lengths I've no idea), and I'll stick a length in the post for you..... ...

It's no better than OEM, but it will be better than the bit your have on there now.... Only thing to mind is that the old piece has wire reinforcement in it, so if you grab and twist you run the real risk of opening your thumb up from end to end Mole grips are your freinds....

** Update: i wrapped a euro car parts shopping bag around the breather hose and uncollapsed it, didn't seem to affect the idle or lumpy running, engine did maybe sound a bit more positive and gutsy but might be my ears plaing tricks on me. secondly this servo braided pipe at the left, did the same and noticed no change in running. i am thinking it's the carb now. new gaskets.

i seem to be getting a bit of coolant vapour from the gaskets arount the water jackets, boy the engine is smelly. i need to hang myself on the washing line to air myself out! thanks t25convert i might take you up on that, is it braided washing machine type hose you are talking about for the oil breather?

i think the carb seems to look a bit leaky around its base with oil is that normal?

by the way this is an open call to anyone in the area to come and have a look at this engine for safety's sake, couple of the things i don't like the look of but you might say they're fine!

Which part of this professional advice, kindly and freely given, do you not understand ? Several people who have experience of these vans have tried to help yet you seem to think that a carrier bag will fix it for you.

ok let's clear this up. i am looking for a leak.

question. what's the point in mindlessly replacing and paying for hoses you don't need? no point. opinions are like rear ends, everyone has one. the reality is that probably a lot of things need replacing but makes sense to do the most important things first.

it's been clearly said on other posts from experienced people that people have wrapped gloved hands around hoses and seen the revs pick up, diagnosed hose leaks etc. since these things were put to me to check, i checked them!

from the first picture you can see a leak around the carb, probably needs gaskets, i

i have already done the carb cleaner spraying around the carb, i needed to do something a bit more targeted for the hoses.

i will take your reply in good faith that we don't know each other and it's just the internet. no need to knock each other, fixing is fun!

Mate I and others are trying to help you, but you don't seam to be listening. I am not giving you opinions but trying to give you facts...You want to replace the important things first, which im guessing is the carb when the fault is more than likely a 10p hose. Hay that's up to you, go ahead and waste money..
