Been having a look at your pics, nice work there! Thinking about undertaking some similar work on mine soon. Did you do all that work in your back yard and if so did you just put a cover on the van at night? Just wondering as that's where I'd have to do mine.

I was lucky and at the time had a workshop to my disposal. Nothing wrong with doing it outside, but the rust moves quicker. Big areas of bare metal that you can sand easily are ok for a while unprotected, but make sure you paint any hard to get to bits, seams etc. with a zinc based primer (not porous like other primers). Treat filler like a hard to get to area too, also porous so make sure you protect it with the primer again. Good luck! I just smashed the rear quarter of my van so I'm about to do it all again! I had a huge blue tarp draped over the van that was fixed to the wheels on the offside and lifted up into a kind of awning type thing, best way found is to pick a week when the weather is good and work fast

Ok here we go...... again! I smashed my van up a month ago or so and after a lot of help from "metalmick8y" (thank you for all your help). The insurance company have coughed up. As always with major work I thought I'd keep you all up to date.

Began by stripping the van


Off comes the arch I did a year ago,

Right, this is more metal gone than I'd normally like, but with accident damage it's hard to keep good reference points. The good thing here is I've found some panels off of another van so the fitment should be far better than with reproduction parts.



Ok here we have the replacement rear panel. Loads of cutting to do before it's ready.


Getting there...

Does anyone know why the rear end I'm chopping up to fit has less holes under the bumper than my original? Check out the photos. I think it might be from a diesel, were the petrol's and diesels different?

That looks like a factory vw grinder, got a part no! dont knoow about the panal but its the same as the one I fitted to mine and came of a petrol,
Hah clamp the back panal on then rear 1/4 bit and youll soon have an idea what to make up to join it, keep the picks coming

Full on day today, don't think I've ever cut so much metal. I smell revolting! Engine's coming out tomorrow, it'll give me more access and a chance for an overhall. Right beer... bed.

Thanks for the part no, yep having the lump out the way will more than compensate for the time saved to get at stuff, plus a load easier to weld, now what was that other small job I was going to do when it was out,

Great to see other peoples work, my vans an 86 and a lot more rotten. Been doing the same as you but taken me 3 yrs!
