Someone's kindly sent me that ebay link before and a few things put me off. I'd be worried how secure it is, if I left the van somewhere for 2/3 hours would some ned with a screwdriver have managed to remove it before I got back? Secondly would the rock and roll bed be able to go down with the grate in position?

Yeah that ones not as good as the one in my head!

Unfortunately I don't have the tools to make the one in my head!

What I had in mind was something that was hinged from the top (same as the tailgate), and which could be attached to the bottom of the tailgate, so when you open it, the fence moves up with it, hence not getting in the way when not in use, but which can be easily unclipped from the bottom of the tail gate when needed and instead locked down while the tailgate is up.

Provided it would provide enough ventilation... and I'm not totally convinced it would do, for me the main problem is that my dog gets very territorial over his vehicle, and would probably shout at people through the bars

You should meet Courgette's dog 'Missis' - goes ape at any dog(s) that walk past her van even at a good distance. Funnily enough doesn't seem to mind people so much.........
Wallace on the other hand (Courgette's other dog} is so laid back I doubt he'd bat an eyelid unless he had to budge over and share the bed

Mine shouts at mainly other dogs, teenagers, OAPs and anyone who looks remotely nervous! Outside of his van/car, no problem at all, and if anyone gets into the van/car he stops shouting.... all mouth he is

Problem is it does worry people because he is rather large! (Mastiff)

Well I need to do something before the summer... A mate of mine is a welder, I'll draw up a plan and ask for a quote... I'll have a look into hinges and clips etc and see how much one would cost in all to knock up. I'll let you know the price if I complete this little feat!

Hi , A pal of mine nearly ended up having a punch-up on a show ground (not to long ago) for smashing the windows on a vehicle that had two dogs in ,, he could clearly see that the dogs were in a bad way , police were at the show and were strait over ,, they arrested the owner as it was too late for one of the dogs ,,,,,,,, I know its a bit tough we have a boxer thats on jelly beans ,, the only time we've took him camping was when a pup , the sister in-law looks after him when we go away

Our dogs go everywhere with us in the van it's there favourite place, but we usually holiday in the rain as standard, or snow for that matter. I would confirm it would be hotter outside than in though atleast in our van. When we have went to bike rallies with them and it has been hot they have chossen to sit in the van than outside but our westy has double glazed windows and I put the thermo mats in the windscreen. They are big furry golden retrievers!

We alway park in shady spots and we have the roof and the windows open as we have the deflector thingys.

What about one of these type things, http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk/cool-d ... 943-0.html we have one for the car and used it for our holidays last year to a cottage in devon, it was hot there, we spent many a day at the beach just for them, I hate the beach! and they would get hotter in the car than in the van. We have a fully fitted mesh dog gaurd in the car and then use this if it's just for a little ventilation but we leave the tailgate open if it was hot and cover the tailgate. top tip if you ever go to the eden project they have covered doggy parking - I think everywhere should have this! it was fab. Anyway our boot lock bar is a bit of rod which Matt manhandled and welded it is 9 inches long and has a curl at one end this wiggles over the mondeo tailgate post and the other end it bent into a triangle at the other which clips into the lock, dead easy to do not tried it on the van as we haven't needed to. I would post a pic but I'm no use at these things!!

Love the idea of the fan though that looks excellent we have mounted springy clip ones in ours but it's just in the van.

Common sense should always prevail - chose what you do depending on the weather, I wouldn't fancy being in a museam on a hot day myself

Mash, Thanks for the info on the the dog parking at the Eden project I can put that on the list of great places to visit with your dog.

Another one would be the Victory down at Portsmouth. Although you cannot take your dog in or on, you can go into the dedicated docks where all the exhibits are ie: Mary Rose and Warrior etc (plenty of areas of seating and shade and outdoor eating places).
We took it in turns to go on the Victory with the guided tours, whilst the other sat in the shade with our dog. Lots of people there with dogs.
Perhaps we should have a thread about where you can take your dog on holiday/day out

Marwell Zoo have dog kennels where you can leave your dog for the day while you go round the zoo. Not sure if you have to pay or not.
