1.9 60 PS is the DF which has the Pict carburettor
1.9 78 PS is the DG which has the Pierburg 2E3 carb.
This is a pic of it:

Looks like a DF mate same as mine, Incidently if the metal water pipe that runs across the top of the engine is looking worse for wear then my buddy can make you a nice shiney new one .

ok, I think I'm getting this but still have one question........
I have a 1.9 DF (60PS) which is generally on it's way to becoming cream crackered.
Can I put a1.9 DG engine in it as long as I change the carbs too or will it not fit right?

1.9 is a straight swap engine you'll need the 1.9 carb and manifold.

The DG may have a later (better) cooling system than your DF, be warned much of the hoses etc can be difficult/impossible to acquire new and so you'll need to find good pre-loved bits so grab any hoses and pipes you can from the donor if you get the chance
Ian.

So if mine is 1.9 with feul injection 1985. What is it?
Think the engine code is gw same as mine

the dg has a water supply to the carb df doesn't.

Ok, so it's possible then if I buy the right carb to be fitted in with the DG engine.
I managed to grab some water hoses that go round the engine bay (genuine VW) in really good condition from flea bay (£1.20 - bargain

). So I'll keep my eye out for some other good condition ones.
Thanks all

Due to current problems with my engine I have decided that my best plan of attack for long term trouble free motoring is to purchase a reconditioned engine. I am currently doing research and am trying to justify the costs of the new engine to the future running costs. It looks like lots of people have gone down the route of upgrading a 1.9Dg Waterboxer - to a 2.1Dj Waterboxer and been very happy with the result. I am not interested in the fuel injection - I am very interested in fuel economy however and maybe LPG in the future. It would be very interesting to know what else I / my mechanic friend need to look out for in this conversion process or is it going to be straight forward using my existing 4 speed gearbox from the DG. Will it make the van more valuable if I was ever to sell? I am interested in keeping the van fairly authentic.
As far as I know so far I must watch out for:
1. Carburettor should be a Pierburg from the DG for straight swap.
Anything else?
I will photograph the eingine and get engine codes at the weekend.

LATE cooling system 1.9 DG to a 2.1DJ short motor swap is extremely straight forward. Early 1.9 DG system is different from a 2.1 ... some are running early on 2.1 but I can't comment on that because of the oil cooler fitted to the 2.1 .
Economy is the same as a DG on a carb ... i.e around 18 >22. Gassed and it's £ for £ equivalent of 30mpg.

as much as i like the home making of parts for our vans, i would be worried about the long term effects of using copper pipes (thats what the new pipe work looks like to me) in to the cooling system. i am sure that some one with more of an understanding on cooling systems could comment further on the subject. i know there has been some comment on the use of s/s water pipes and from my understanding providing that they are isolated (via rubber hoses) from outher components there should not be an issue.
i think there is a thread about it on the rjes site.

For reference here's a 2.1 DJ with the 1.9 DG Pierburg carb and lpg conversion and late cooling setup and exhaust ..

Hmm thanks for the info Ian. Looking at the pic... my DG looks more like the DF image posted earlier - which I guess means I have an earlier DG and incompatible water pipes.
So maybe converting the van to a 2.1 is not an option. Hmmm. I will take a foto of my engine at the weekend and get the engine codes.
Cheers.

Interesting - my possibility of engines has just extended thanks to a link from Syncro spares.
I am looking at either a Vege, a Remtec or now - The Engine Shop.
The search for good reports about engines continues.

At 1984 it should be 'early' styleee cooling system, as I said it can be done but I haven't done one and therefore can't comment about the way others have got round the oil cooler plumbing.

Might just keep it simple with a straight swap - once again looking down the economy route of things.
Save my money for a LPG conversion and help the environment and my pocket at the same time.
As soon as I know more I will post.
Thanks again Ian.
