Crash tested
Combi based - seatbelt mounting points.
Vohringer board
or, lob the roof off and don't add any extra strength
Based on cheap panel vans
Ply wood, chipboard

yeah, well worth the extra couple of grand
Vohringer board
eeerm.......no you're gonna have to explain that one
don't bother...just googled it
or, lob the roof off and don't add any extra strength
The cross members already provide the strength
Based on cheap panel vans
So are the Combi/Caravelle
Ply wood, chipboard
You going to this years re-enactment then?
It's a camper not a Panzer

That just highlighted your ignorance
No, they are not all crash tested, the roof is a integral part of the vehicles strength, remove it and you take it away from the type approval that was once issued to it years ago, if that happens then the crash testing carried out is no longer valid for that vehicle.
Same with the windows cut into a panel van, take the window out and see how floppy the sides of the van are, take the window out of a combi, solid.
Combis are not based on panel vans, combis come from the factory with windwos, and proper window appetures.
Vohringer board is very strong, durable, and very light, ply and chipboard are neither.
Envy is a terrible thing.
In fairness, the early Devon and Danbury conversions are fair, the Combi based ones, interiors are well thought out and well built, it's when we move to the mid eighties cheap and cheaful manky lining carpet heaven that things go awry

They are a better construction and command a premium because of it. Snob value is in the eye of the non owner, probably.

Many thanks for all the replies. I shall carefully consider all advice and make sure I view as many different vans as possible before finally deciding which type of van is right for me.
However I suppose to main question is do I fancy Grilled bacon on toast or fried bread & bacon!!

I disagree. Although the Autosleepers interiors are very well made, the base vehicle left the VW factory designed as a panel van not a camper. You pay your money you take your choice.
