Air leaks: If you haven't already tried it, spraying Easy Start or WD40 around suspect leaky areas when idling is a popular trick, to see if the revs rise.
Be carefull when spraying easy start or WD, especially if there are any loose sparks from the ignition about...I have seen an engine get very hot very fast doing that  But ya it will show up an air leak :ok

Ok, yeah, I did it  Get's a bit hot  Be careful in there!!!

well thanks for all the comments/advice, i have sprayed tons of wd and carb cleaner looking for leaks and no joy. the van is now staying off the road for a bit longer, i am gonna rebuild the engine and start again renewing all engine bits as i am sick of it, especially afeter tonites shananigans!!!! there is no way it is gonna make it to goth tommorow so i will be there in a peogeot partner van with no badge on the front (cos im ashamed) so come say hi if u are there.

I took the van back to garage tonite to check the emmisions on there machine. basically they are just the same as before if not worse. the hiydrocarbons peaked at about 1690 and went up as the revs were raised!!!!!

anyways, on the way home the engine started rattling and knocking!!!! by the time i got to my house it sounded really bad and when i got out and looked there was smoke pouring out the top side vents on the van and from underneath!!!!!

funny thing is, i started it a couple of hours later and it started ok with no knocking or rattling!!!! I am lost with the ruddy thing now and wouldnt trust it now anyway. So as said before, i have a spare engine with it (not sure on condition though) going to strip down the two and rebuild 1 good engine from them hioefully with all new seals ect.

having said that if i could find another engine COMPLETE with carbs and everything still on, so i can just throw it in and get it going/mot'ed for the right price, i may do that (although the other engine will still get rebuilt anyway just so its ready if anything happens)

so as you can tell im not in the best of moods at the mo, although i am passed caring now and think i will laugh instead of cry :rofl going looney here

The first thing you should do before writing off that engine, is take the compressions.

If they are OK and it's not knocking it's ends and has decent oil pressure, then there's probably nothing wrong with it... apart from the bolt on bits that make it run properly :?:
