Our Jack Russell (named Jack would u believe?) travels in a dog cage, and sleeps in it too. It's a large cage and would easily house a Bassett. We also have a ground screw thing and a decent tether for during the day so he can mooch about but still be on a lead.

The cage folds up easly, so is not a problem when not in use, or sometimes doubles as a coffee table. I don't remember where I got it from, but it was an internet purchase and not very expensive as I recall.

It's great fun having a pooch on camp, and good to have someone pleased to see you.

I'll let you know how i get on for the next 3 days in wales with my rottweiler, none of us have camped in the van yet i just hope it doesn't rain too much...............

Each of our one at a time rescue home mongrel dogs came camping and campervanning with us over the years but a few years ago when the last one died at typically 17 - 19 years old we decided not to have another as we would be really old and tatty by the time that one popped off. Having been without for a number of years though we find them - particularly my mates Dulux special - discusting filthy animals which smell and shake snot all over the place at the slightest provocation and seriously curtail your freedom. Clearly the negatives are not percievable untill you get over the withdrawal symptoms but the thought of having any animal other than humans (and even some of them) in our lovely clean van is completely out of the question.

All went well for me trip to wales, pooch slept on front seats. She wasn't too impresed by the lack of curtains at our overnight stop in a services, but sorted that out for the next night and she was as good as gold. Bought myself a groundscrew thingy, lasted all of 5 mins before being bent right over, but managed to clip the lead to jacking point and all was fine!

Is there a theme starting here.?
I too have a couple of large old lurchers who sleep in the awning often curled up on or even in kids sleeping bags.
They travel on cushion over engine cover as like warmth.Sleep for most of journeys although occasionally will open an eye if we are stuck in traffic.
They like most long tailed sight hounds are totally wussies though and hate getting their feet wet on the beach.Tried to put them on my board once and you should have heard the fuss!
I agree though,its all about common sense.
Not everyone wants dogs on campsites or beaches so understand others points of view and always carry bag supplies!
My dogs rarely bark and are a damn sight quieter than a lot of families on campsites who think the idea of camping is to bring flat screen tellies.xbox360`s playstation/laptops or even karoake machines.Apparantly people cannot bear to be away from facebook or twittering or cannot miss soap episodes or X factor! God help us!

Our Parsons Jack Russel used to stand on the engine cover in our FFoorrdd Thames homebuilt and lean like a motorcycle round bends. The pleasure of watching that almost made up for her nearly getting us all shot by the farmers when she hearded hundreds of sheep into a river or when she puked up nearly a whole Cornish Pasty donated by SWEBTB (She With Eyes Bigger Than Belly) onto the dashboard!
