Blimey, this one is getting a bit old! Looks like the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter
It would seem that the EJ22 has been running on the wrong MAF all this time, if what syncroparge@vwkd reckons
There were two different MAF fitted to early, first generation Legacys and you need the correct one or the ecu throws up a code 49 (wrong maf fitted). Trouble is you can get a code 49 with an air leak too!
It had the 22680 AA160 / A36-000 R60 MAF and I swapped it for another - no change and ran just the same; "hanging" on a closed throttle (just like running on carbs too rich), rising idle when hot and full-throttle misfire. So it wasn't that.
Looks like it should have the AA190 MAF which is identical apart from the polarity (the ecu identifies it by which one of two pins is shorted to earth and which shows 5v)
So now I need one of those to try out

I'm confused now. I thoght you'd solved your problem when you found the split hose which was allowing unmetered air in to the engine. Are you not 100% sure that your original MAF is the right one for then engine either then? It's a big coincidence if you both have the wrong MAF. Have you checked that you both have the same MAF wiring (i.e same pins of the MAF connector used)? I know your ECU's are the same, but the harnesses may not be.

I hoped that the split hose problem had fixed things, but it didn't. Got a bit brassed off and just drove it until the tax ran out and let it sit on the drive.
As you observed before Richard, I do have a particularly early 4-plug ecu. Since I didn't carry out the conversion originally, I don't even know what the donor vehicle was - auto or manual.
There do seem to be lots of AA160 mafs about but 190's are very scarce at the moment. I may have to go for the wiring check/swap as described on the vwkd thread and see if it changes anything.
If I can find a 190 maf going for £20 or £30 then I'll try it for the sake of a few quid.

answered on vwkd, as the same problem is being discussed on two forums again
