Fitting a 12V one will get your gauges working but they will read slightly higher than they should. The needles will also fluctuate as the Alternator voltage changes because all Regulators need a higher input voltage than their output to function correctly, in a nutshell go for the 10V. Either that or just wire link the regulator socket outer connections (that the regulator legs fit into) and run your gauges directly off the 12V untill you get a regulator fitted. The gauges will fluctuate and read slightly higher but at least they will be doing something in the meantime,

Heres the data sheet, legs are wrong way around with input on the left so fit it with the tab upwards and a nut behind it......

It never occurred to me that VW (and others no doubt) would make a "special" 10 V regulator (with input and output legs reversed) when a common one is already so readily available
Makes you wonder why !! (

However, if it were I, I would buy the cheap one and reverse the regulator and make provision for heat transfer in the way you suggest

GSF have this..............

Its not just vw that use this voltage regulator, you will find the same thing is 80's Vauxhall dash pods too. Astra + cavilier for certain if you can find a scrap one.

I must be blind as a bat Grun, I looked on GSF and couldn't see it listed. Still dear for a regulator but cheaper than the prices quoted on the VAGCAT website...............

1.
