just measured the danbury top and at the highest point it is 11 1/2 inches and just over 9 inches at the lowest point. i think its an ok height for for a poo top as you can get all the upholstery under it for the bed topside. i am interested in how you will make one out of an old roof. i have thought about it often and the only way i can think of doing it is to cut it into quarters then trim it down and weld it back together again as it would need to be smaller than the original roof to allow for rake inwards on the sides and the front and back. in my mind once that was done it could be bonded onto a wooden frame that made up the height from the gutters, this could be made from ply with formers going along the width of it to hold it all in place, once assembled filler it and use it for a mould. hell of a lot of work though. keep us posted i would be very interested to see how you get on with it.

Yes, I could be in for a lot of work and bartering with my panel man (restorer and dubber)!
My plan is to first make a "skirt" with suitably angled sides and tailgate clearance etc. which will sit on the roof as per a conventional pop top; This can be done using the donor roof as a template. Then as you say, measure up the difference in length and width and take a strip out of the middle, both ways (one at a time).
The bottom edges will need reinforcing with a return and drainage holes (spot welded on), plus a lightweight square tube frame to receive the canopy and then brackets for struts etc.
You can tell that I've been thinking a lot about this...
It will either be spectacularly good or a hideous waste of time and effort. Hoping for the first!

Nice syncro out there in diggerland! Not what I'm aiming for as it 'appens. What I described was a bit misleading now that I've read it again...
Mine will be a one-piece, side-hinged affair and just tall enough to cover a Viking-inspired slide-out mechanism and cushions, to sleep my three rapidly growing offspring (Who will all be 190cm+ if they keep eating at the current rate)
Off to collect a good steel roof panel tomorrow! Enough money
