Now remember Rob ure odometer will under read by about 8 to 10% because you are running bigger than standard tyres.

With all this talk of MPG - and the fact that Diesel has dropped to €0.89 cent a litre - I went down to the village and brimmed the tank, which took ages and zeroed the trip and the sat nav. I had added the required quantity of Dipetane beforehand and off we went. I'll report back soon. Most of the driving will be on Motorways and A roads but there will be a few hilly back roads cuz I live up the mountains!
I use a 1.0 Polo day to day and I average 54 mpg. I dont use my Mercedes in the winter but I averaged 25 mpg with her but when I added Dipetane I averaged 27 mpg.
When I rebuild my AAZ Id hope to keep the same figures as the knackered JX. Changing the fuel filter regularly helps the figures.

How big is a tank on a 2wd diesel?
Ah sorry Pete, with the best will in the world then, cannot take those figures as meaningful then...
The only way to do it is to brim, writedown mileage, and re-brim and record new mileage and litres-to-re-brim...
Then as Slobbo and myself, keep a continuing record doing that over a couple of thousand miles or more...

Good point Russel, I can scale Slobbo's graph easily once we know... I happen to know mine is spot on..
Conversely, others will be over-optimisitic to some, maybe a small amount...

I have found that the odometer is correct, whilst the speedo is optomistic. Can that be so, is the over reading just on the speed, not on the mileage. Is this just speculative, or can we test it. The odometer always agrees with Tom Tom on total distances, and on Autoroute aswell.

Yes it can be true, as you no doubt know, speedos have to over-read by 2~5% at various speeds, whilst odos 'should' be accurate (for the delivered tyres)
In other words the speedo over-reading correction is done internally...

At 30 our Micra reads about 3mph over and at 90 (calibrated on a disused airfield of course) it's doing 85~86 ish on the Tom-Tom
On the Syncro, it's quite possible our speedo is spot on and yet we're doing 5% more miles than the odo is showing, to be honest, haven't calibrated the odo itself

My ODO over reads about 13%, speedo is about 20% over. Speedo used to be up to 35%. Main problem is its got the wrong diff drive on it, presumably some numpty got the wrong bit when the original failed, though given the tyre sizes what VW say is right would still have over read on the trip by about 7%.
I have this theory the speedos can read alot over (instead of a bit over as they are set) because syncros seem to get the speedo wobble at a low enough speed to hit the stopper. The constant clattering against the stop probubly slowly moves the neadle so over the years the error gets bigger and % error non linear - pull the neadle off and put it back slightly further round restores it. Alot of oil comming up the cable can also make it over read as it can create a fluid coupling between magnets. The other cause of speedo error is the magnets looseing magnatisum or the spring getting week but they seem relatively reliable, I have a few 50 year old clocks here that all read bob on still. As the ODO is pure gearing it can't get out unless someone fits the wrong gearing, though readings are always aprox due to tyre ware and stuff.

Slobbo's +10% for wheels and tyres then:
28 ~29 mpg to-date with lots of town driving included.... not bad for a Syncro?

And would be the same as a T4 tdi. Which would seem about right.

I sold my 2wd van just before Christmas so can't say for sure what it was doing.
We used to cruze with a splitty bus & a 1.9DG 2wd & the both filled up a lot more often than I did.
If I sell my bay window camper I am looking to get another syncro. Hence the post. I did for a second consider the 2.1 but I just can't live with the economy, or lack of it.
Also if I get a diesel, I can slip the odd receipt through the business

Well my result is as follows
Distance travelled 258.5 Kms
Amount of fuel to brim tank 21.12 liters
MPG = 34.58
l/100 kms = 8.17
worse than expected but the difference to the van since my last consumption test is that I have fitted a set of Tristar mirrors!

I just did a trip to tesco down the end of my road were i fill up. Petrol 83.9ppl Derv 95.9ppl
2.1i on petrol costs 15p per mile to run
tdi costs 15p per mile to run
1.6td costs 12p per mile to run
2.1i on lpg costs 10p per mile to run
All worked out on the info on this thread to date at today's fuel prices. On an average mileage of 5000 miles per year the 2.1i would only cost an extra £150 to run. A small price to pay spread out at £2.88 per week for loads more power i recon that you could live with that and don't think a 2.1i is lacking in economy That much compared to the 1.6td. If the 2.1i was gassed you would be £100 a year better off than the 1.6td . The tdi even if you take off the 10% on Slobbos figures at today's fuel price it is the same as a 2.1i on petrol and would cost £250 a year more to run than a 2.1 on gas.
I dont think i have left anything out.

And the sheer joy of having a standard vehicle.

Cheers for re calculating the figures. I forgot to factor in the 10% speedo difference.
The reason I got the TDI was the torque and drivability of the TDI compared to the standard diesel. I was constantly flogging the AAZ to get it to perform to a level I was happy with. The fuel efficiency increase was an added bonus. If I had to buy another Syncro I would probably go for a 2.1 petrol on LPG. They seem to have good on road performance. As most of what I do is on road and muddy field stuff the petrol would probably do me.
