0 compression in cyl 4, only 130 in opp one

That's only 2 cylinders, he ho!

Could be a valve seat moved and broken valve resulting, so bits have done damage - seen loose seats before on aircooleds.

1) It's got to come whatever you do, so gte it out, strain the oil as you drain just to see what's in it, an old stocking works!

2) Would be worth popping the heads off for a gander, just in case, one or both might be worth hanging on to.

3) Start looking for a good CU scrapper..

Sounds like all caused by the thing never having been set up properly, running inappropraite timing curve and possibly poor carburation as well...

Shame...

What should a decent compression read?

I might take my 2ltr CU over the Winter.

Ahem.....

So Mr "not exactly a spanner head 2008" may have been right after all ?

Ok
So in my limited estimation, looking at it from my basic knowledge of physics and mechanics.

If the opp cylinder is losing pressure ie 130 psi from an expected 160 = no opposite pressure from cylinder 4

If no horrendous rattling = no smashed piston, likely to be a hole in piston head or something plus cracked cylinder head. Could it simply be cylinder head?

bound to be flotsam in the system from hole, could ally "feck" up the steel from the block ?

I find it weird that theres no massive rattles and it drives ok, just not great.

All a learning curve for me, and to be honest cant wait to open it all up.

No smoke from oil, no major oil leaks.

Ive only ever had watercooled VWs (golf mk2), so im at a loss.

TBH, until you pop heads off you really won't know, please let us know when you do, ta.
