Not trying to make it any more difficult for you dogrady1 as to your best cause to resolve your 1.6td engine problem.But cost wise i would go with andysimpson who has advice you to consider a 1Y i managed to pick up a good one for £200 .If you do consider this i would advice you to spend some time and read through the 1Y discussion topics regarding the 1.6/td to 1Y .

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll see how today goes and let you know where I am at tonight. Is it worth me just putting the engine back in the camper and trying it out with the new 'O'seal and the unblocked air filter? Then if she is still blowing oil out the dipstick, do my research properly this time and get a new engine.

You don't hang around, motor out already!
Examine the dip stick seal and if it looks suspect pop a new one on. Even if it looks Ok for the sake of say a couple of quid replace it.
In answer to one of your earlier questions the o-ring seal slips over the lower portion of dip stick outer tube & bears up against the washer. When the tube is pushed back into the block the o-ring seals the outer tube against the block. The o-ring won't however prevent oil being pushed up thru & out of the tube if the motor has a pressure build up issue.
If you are 100% certain the oil is coming up thru the tube rather than leaking from the base you have other motor issues to resolve.
I've over the years changed just about all the motor ancillaries; starter motors, alternators, turbo, exhaust systems, water pumps ect...ect..ect on various T3's {T25}. I've touchwood never had to drop a motor or strip one as yet, so there are far more experienced members who should be able to point you in the right direction. All I can say is be very methodical in sorting motor issue. The best advice I was ever given for free by a top engineer was take a break, make a cup of tea & think thru your next step carefully.
I would think it would be wise to gather up & draw on good advice from other members before making any firm decision on how to proceed. Tough call this one as you've done the hard work dropping the motor. Bonne courage! Good luck!

Another point is the amount of time taken to strip and re-build the engine, took me 3 months!!! [waiting for parts and info and my poor Spanish].
Andy, will his power steering parts fit on a 1.9 engine?.

I am NO EXPERT on Diesels BUT

Are these engines basically the same design as the 1.8 petrol Golf Scirocco blocks ? ( I think they are )

If so the Golf / Scirocco blocks have a common fault that causes exactly these symptoms.

In the cam cover these is a fine wire gauze inside a tin enclosure that acts as a "condenser" to stop oil droplets from going out of the breather.

This fine gauze gets blocked over time and although the breather appears clear it can be restricted inside the cam cover.

I was trying to find the full and comprehensive txt file I wrote for the Scirocco forum about this but it's gone :0

However, consider it, I know of two folks who swapped out perfectly good motors because of this, only to find later that the cam cover breather gauze was blocked with all kinds of crud.

I only found out about it when it happened to my Scirocco and whilst looking in the breakers for a replacement motor, a guy who knew about it pointed me in the right direction.

It is possible to clean it out but you have to burn it with petrol to make the yucky deposits go hard and powdery and then bash it so it rains out like dry soot. This does not work very well and is a messy pain to do. The guy in the breakers said the best way to heat it up to get the effect was with a gas torch, but I didn't have one available. Probably best to get a new cam cover ( not too dear ) - It will look nice and shiny new then too :)

Worth a try for sure I would suggest.

p.s. - don't be put off doing it just because you can feel gasses coming out of the breather, mine did this ok, but was still cured after the treatment !

Hi Guys,
Well I washed down the engine today so that I could get a good look at it before I was going to strip her apart. The 'O' ring seal on the dip stick tube at the bottom (attached to engine) does not look too bad. There is a resistance fit into the hole, however, it looks like the metal tube itself has been rubbing and there are pits all around it where the copper/brass washer has been rubbing (must be from engine vibration). The 'o' ring itself has a few pits in it also. I don't know whether to just get a new ring and throw the engine back in the camper. I would have to get a new top to my vacuum pump also as the pipe has broken off exactly at the metal top. I don't think it is fixable and so maybe a new pump is needed. Has anyone got any ideas where I can get the bits. I went to the 'VW Main Dealer' at Lakeside Stoke on Trent on the way home and they say they don't deal with these parts anymore. They can't even look them up on the computer. They only deal with cars. Bloody rubbish. I think the guy was just trying to fob me off because my face is all covered in oil. I will also need a new bit of air pipe. The on that goes from the outside camper vent to the infeed of the air filter. Anyone know the diameter as I still have the plastic parts that interface, but no tubing (its disintegrated!). I will also need an approximate length.

Now the fun bit... I think I will read through the topic of fitting a different engine in whilst I am looking for any engine that may get me back on the road. Anyone got a 1.6TD JX? Alternatively one of those 1Y 1.9 jobbies?

I am a bit stuck now. I need some advice. I think the refurb of top and bottom of my 1.6TD is out of the question from what you are saying.

At least I am still smiling.

These vacum pumps are fitted with a plastic connection are common to other VW vehicles.I have one fitted on the 1Y engine to the caddy.I broke the one on the 1.6td or you could have had it.

Differnt set up with diesels and diesel don't suffer with breathers blocking up as much as petrols.
