Paul knows... ;-)

The head you have bought is an early DG, with the smaller combustion chamber. It is important to match it both sides, as both heads should be identical or you could have different compression ratios going on! Don't mix it with an AMC.

Check the part number on your heads head - 025 101 375, is there a suffix after ?

not much in it I doubt it would cause any noticeable differance
I'm sure there are engines out there with early and late heads or VW and AMC head mix

If you are going by this for cc measurements there looks like something wrong with the 'low conpression head' to me
maybe its been skimmed?

According to the number crunching and measuring I have done I reckon the total head cc in that thread is overstated by about 3cc. Change that and all the static CR for all the engines come back into manufacturers spec. I haven't got the perspex sheet to do the head cc's on my "Unknown" heads at the moment (one of the reasons why the valves haven't been taken out)

There's another thread which shows a difference in the inlet ports between the original and the suffic C heads https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=147483

I think Ciaraneng will probably have the early heads as he has an '83 van. Only one way to know. :)

I'm guessing this is something I should have looked for before I ordered an early head.

Both heads seem to be from different casting lots but both also seem to have a C designation meaning that they are late heads right? One says Germany 9 and the other Germany 6.

Late heads

Looks like the van has had a rebuilt or replacement engine fitted at some point.

2 new AMC heads, a s/h early head, a s/h late head, pair of complete heads from Mecatechnic for €519 each

Worth checking if there really is a problem having early / late heads on the same engine. I believe the static compression ratios stayed the same, as did pistons / barrels, so the head cc's would have to be the same, but others have more experience / deeper knowledge on these engines than me.

Wanted ads on here get a decent response too

Decisions decisions

Gah, I just realised my heads are numbered 025-101-375 and that the one I ordered is 025-101-355. BW says that the 355 head is the correct one for my DG engine. VW Heritage says a 025-101-065CX is the right one.

If I found a new 025-101-375 somewhere else could I go with that?

BW are normally spot on for advice.

Their page does say the heads are for the DG, but according to my ETKA the 355 part number which is also shown is for the DF engine. Smaller valves and intake port is smaller different shape.

I expect you'll have it tomorrow so will know for sure

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=163534

That thread will help you understand the differences. I have DG heads on a DF case

Thanks Carrera. I'm in Ireland so may have to wait a few days...

025-101-065CX is the part number for a complete head, rather than the bare head.

From what I can see the Heritage product is AMC product, not VW as well

I have a second hand late DG head that’s yours for the price of postage if it helps Ciaraneng - one of the exhaust studs has snapped so will require a recoil and a valve is missing (you’d probably want to change them anyway) but other than that all looks ok. I bought it as a spare for when I did my rebuild but didn’t need it.

Let me know and I’ll fire over some pics.

Thanks again Carrera. Learning all the time here.

To add to the confusion, the BW (and VW) code listed on the BW page is 025-101-355 but one of the pics clearly shows a casting no. 025101375. I guess I'll wait and see what arrives...
