Hi Matt
Have pm'd you a full explanation of what I have done.
For others here, as zinc passivated surface is a very thin electroplated surface rather than a hot dipped zinc finish, I've just gone with a high temperature engine enamel paint. I'm sure this will give a long lasting surface but it will be very easy to keep an eye on it and touch it up - :rofl - if and when necessary.

Got the message thanks

RJES Richard suggested I give hammerite tech dept a call and ask - he gave me the proper name of the process for his plating..

I think I will try the hammerite for galvanised... https://www.hammerite.co.uk/product/dir ... tal-paint/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Next teaser is the input shaft question.... petrol v diesel

I think its a case of "size matters" .... and in my case I might be found wanting in the length department

Only time will tell

PS for any following this - when I say "day" its just a couple or three hours - not full days...

Drilled out and helicoiled broken exhaust stud..

... hammerited - gloss black the tank and engine bulkhead/firewall under the removed souundproofing.

Removed sump and its marinating in nitromors

Tin of contact adhesive from B&Q and tin of straight to galvanised hammerite

For additional sound absorption I intend to glue a camping foam bed roll to the bulkhead and then refit the old foamy soundproofing/frame over the top

Driled hole in bulkhead threaded loom in place

Tomorrow - brakes on daughters micra/ then ...

Gearbox extension bracket / bolt up slave cyl bracket / install tank and filer neck/ paint engine cradle ....

Steady progress and happy following Aidian and Richards advice on the input shaft

Have you changed the hard to get to gear rod bush whilst the tank is out ? You will regret it later if you don't fit a new early linkage chassis bush.

Check that your "karrimat" is both fire retardent and also not water-retaining.
No guarantee that it will be either.

Good evening matt
Been watching your posts with interest as i soon will be doing the subaru conversion,
Hopefully at the end of the year.
I have nearly all the parts. Ej20 engine, rjes bell housing, loom and engine mount,3piece clutch
Just got to get Richards plumbing kit and coolant manifold reveresed
Looking at your last post have you changed the bellhousing yet?
If so did you have any problems undoing the bellhousing bolts on the
Vw one to the gearbox?

Steve

Evening,

Yes - did the bell housing a few days ago - assembled the clutch fork bearing etc whilst on the bench

No problems at all with the bell housing bolts.

But....

Getting the clutch arm off the fork shaft was a bugger.

I ended up cutting the fork shaft with angle grinder/ss cutting disc and even in the bench vice the arm was reluctant to leave the shaft.

Just been painting the sump with rattle can black gloss, - engine bay bulkhead in hammerite ....- not that you can see it but I want to know its clean and protected.

I have quite a few little jobs for weekend but optimistic that the engine will be bolted in next week...

Hi matt
No probs with the bellhousing bolts , great hopefully mine wont be a problem
Have to watch out for the clutch fork
Im using a the hybrid clutch with the standard vw input shaft, the only issue
Ive got to think about is the exhaust system
I covered my bulkhead above the gearbox and engine hatch with some glass foil
Backed closed cell foam from ebay. Add showed lighter held on it so hopefully
Heatproof, sealed the joins and edges with the foil wrap from wickes used for
Air conditioning lagging, great stuff, used this foam and foil on a ex mod
Defender and it made a big difference, i even wrapped the defender downpipe
With exhaust lagging then wrapped the wickes foil over it and it never came off or burnt ,
Closed cell foam dont hold water

Yes - Im dreading the exhaust

Its costing more than I budgeted already -

For exhaust I have plan a and b

I have a motorbike can with a coupling I nail to the subaru headers
or

get an MR2 exhaust and flexible pipe to link it to header

watch this space

Gearbox out yesterday - decided its easier to attach the new mounting and mate :D the box to the engine out of the van

Painted the cradle with hammerite straight to galvanised paint - its more "runny" than normal hammerite , lots of curtains but its covered and protected.

Attacked the gearbox with wire brush and gunk - looks better
