Yes, will be taking it out at some point over the winter, not in any rush though.

Are those original M8 threads? if so I may have some thread left for a new stud as my bolts are only 20mm long and it looks like there's 20mm of thread depth there.

E D I T- ooohhhh... shiney things!!! an M8 helicoil kit just landed on my desk.

yes that pic is m8 origional, 20mm of thread about right, M8 helicoil is betted than M10 imo.

That pic gave me hope, there was enough good thread left in the bottom of the hole to get a stud in good and deep and I could nip the flange up with a nut rather than the short bolt that the well meaning PO's boyfiend put in there, screwing a bolt into Aluminium is never good without a helicoil, but a stud is good as you take the strain on the nut. All sorted now.
Will do a hot compression test tomorrow night.
I'm heading up the island at the weekend to get a mate to assess the welding possabilities, he's a better welder than me and It's a good excuse to ogle his 1935 fjord pickup project.

With everything sealed back up and the engine up to temperature my final compression readings are-

CYL dry wet
1 130 150 psi
2 115 130 psi
3 135 135 psi
4 130 145 psi

All pretty low and most better when wet but not as bad as first thought, so the engine's definately coming out for new rings and seals etc.
Plus a mate dropped off an engine crane tonight and another's coming over in a couple of weeks to give me a hand.
