It's sad the state of engineering, we need a 'cad designer' at where I work. The supply of applicants is worrying, the system is truly broken, the options are for someone from University or someone who has progressed up the ladder. University applicants know *uck all and the rest don't exist.
If you don't ask stupid questions, you get stupid results. Assumptions are the mother of all ....ups

Asked or specified, what apprenticeship? And when?
I was doing a marine engineering (boat mechanic) apprenticeship. Day release college was a combination of machining work on lathes and milling machines, hand fitting metal work and theory. Always interesting, unfortunately the work wasn't. I didn't enjoy just replacing one part for another. Anyway, I was asking for bolts and screws in the stores from a given specification. Is that what you mean?
