Well I finally got round to greasing the CV joints, managed to to do it with a grease gun with a 4 mm tube connected to a 1/8 bsp adaptor, this allowed me to lift the CV boot just a little bit and then push the tube right up to the actual joint. I managed to get about 100 grams in each boot

I have my shafts off the van and the cvs look very dried up. Ant tips for removing the old dried grease?

I use parrafin (or white spirit). Clean, dry, repack. Best done in a container and wear rubber gloves.

After a round trip of 185 miles to Busfest and back, mine are still quiet. That means nothing of course, since the noise had already gone before I regreased them, but having driven at speed on the motorway my confidence has returned.

Thank you - yes, already on it. Particularly tempting as my knocking noise when changing from forward to reverse, or vice versa, is probably a worn CV joint but might just be damaged/worn splines in the shaft itself.

It won't be worn splines Chris. Once a joint even has a small amount of wear, it deteriorates rapidly producing a significant amount of play. Once one end wears, invariably the joint at the opposite end will follow. If you've never changed yours since you've had the vehicle, I'll guarantee thats what you'll find. They have to tolerate a good deal of stress - mostly from a standing start. Unfortunately it gets transmitted from one end to another in fairly rapid succession.
