You can sometimes get a new gasket in without completely removing the manifold... once the studs are out.
As i said a common problem area...
However if you have the manifold off get it surfaced. They burn and distort the faces.. see Wiki on facing it off at home (but Mr Baxter's Brickwerks offers a surface grinding service/requires a jig)
Ditto the turbo /manifold mating faces. . All in Wikipedia...

As Harrymann says and in the Wiki,I did mine on my marble garden wall!

I have booked the van in at brickwerks in may to get sorted.Also get a couple other things done and a good checkover.I dont want to start something i ca.nt finish

Interesting reading this is, I have what sounds like similar symptoms. Under load mine is making a whooshing noise. I've not spotted anything visually after having a bit if a gander at the weekend.

Im not very good at explaining sounds but if you've ever had a vacuum cleaner with one of those so called 'turbo' attachments to clean pet hair - it sounds a bit like that but higher pressure.

I'm hoping to pick some expert brains at Bustypes this weekend

I had this problem with my van. It turned out to be the wastegate on the turbo seized, which was making the turbo overboost, which in turn was then lifting the blowoff valve. The only way of sorting it was to replace the turbo.

When the engine was under load, I used to get a pronounced loud hissing noise. I traced the fault by firstly removing the plastic blow off valve and bunging up the hole on the inlet manifold, the noise stopped immediately. I then wrongly suspected the fault to be the blow off valve so purchased a new one from VW £95, fitted the valve and same problem. I left it like this for a while until the turbo developed an oil leak, so stripped the turbo and found that the wastegate was seized and beyond repair so got a brand new turbo.

Got mine sorted today. Not as drastic as a new turbo or waste gate, mine was simply a broken jubilee clip on the pipe from intercooler. (Cheers MV Engineering for the quick find and fix)

While I'm on if the waste gate was fooked what would be the symptoms ??

I have changed the LDA as I have a spare pump to see if this would help...still the same

Dave what is spooling ? The Noise sounds like something spinning then spinning out of controls if that makes sense. So I don't think it's an air noise!

This is consuming me To get to the bottom of it and I have to Waite until May for brickwerks

Spooling is a general for the turbo getting up to speed and making boost pressure,normally accompanied by a whistling noise.

Hulky, you could bring it over to me if you like and I'll take a quick look for you. I'm in blyth and was at Volkscentre yesterday, good lads but busy I gather. I have the same engine in my 88 Devon, for now anyway...
