I would suggest you might try a product called 'Vactan' which is formulated to treat rust [many people here have used it] and then go over that with a 2 pack primer [do be aware of the H&S issues with 2 pack products] Red oxide is ok but can't do the same job as Vactan, etc it's old tech.really.
BTW, there are other products similar to Vactan, though I can't rmember their names; Boatbuilder on here, I think uses a simialr project

But like everything, you'll only get out what you put in, i.e poor preperation will always give poor results so take as much time as you can in getting everything bright metal clean through blasting or sanding etc, before treating it, etc.
Good luck with the project

Thanks
I actually have a bottle of Vactan that was delivered last week so thats not an issue. Any recomendations on the 2 pack primer to use?

Epoxy primer because it sticks really well and its waterproof. Jotun Jotamastic 80 or 87 is a safe one to use (has no isocyanates in it). 87 has a higher solids content than 80.
Have never been a big fan of Vactan myself - seems a bit plasticky to me, almost like pva glue. Have used phosphoric acid a bit instead - you can buy it on ebay as descaler.

i see youve left the rolled length on the inner closure, how have you joined this to the new panel on the inside, you did well to get that done with the recent weather

Im not really sure, I got a friend who is a time served welder to do it, he's been doing these for years.

I think I know what you mean now MM. If I'm correct then I followed CovKids advice and trimmed it back to good steel, treated it with vactan and then gave it a good coat of red oxide. I opened up the lower drain holes so there is no lip for water to sit in, hopefully this will let it all breathe and avoid a mid sill line of corrosion breaking through.

ahh ok .wasnt having a pop at you nor the welder but i detest these cover over panels, but sometimes needs must if your not able to make the correct parts but..... it is sad to end up going to all the trouble to not do the job correctly. the inner floor should be closed to complete the box construction of the inner sill and also the C post should be correctly welded to both, forget this rubbish about breathing etc,.,bit late now but i hoipe others having this done will take note
